Mark Drakeford Urges Keir Starmer to Plan Departure

Mark Drakeford, former First Minister of Wales, has called on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to establish a timetable for his resignation. Drakeford, the last Labour Wales leader to win a Senedd election, expressed his support for Andy Burnham as the next Labour leader and UK Prime Minister.

Speaking to News, Drakeford described Sir Keir as a "kind man" but stated that a "combination of circumstances and ability" meant his leadership had not been effective.

"I believe he should, but I think he should do so in a planned, respectful way that allows for a smooth transition," Drakeford said when asked if Sir Keir should step down.
"I believe his position personally and his ability to lead an effective government cannot be restored. I think, quite unfairly, there is some hostility towards the prime minister, which I do not believe can be repaired."

Support for Andy Burnham as Labour Leader

Drakeford highlighted that Burnham could speak "authentically for the wider United Kingdom." He emphasized the importance of Labour having a leader not based in London, noting that previous leaders have had roots in the southeast of the UK.

He said,

"We have had a series of leaders whose roots are in the southeast of the United Kingdom. We need someone who can speak genuinely for the wider United Kingdom – the English regions, the nations of the United Kingdom. I believe Andy is the best to do that, which is why he will have my strong support."

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester, is currently contesting the Makerfield by-election in an attempt to return to the House of Commons.

Political Context and Labour's Strategy in Wales

Drakeford also commented on Labour's recent strategy in Wales, describing it as "wrong." He said,

"We spent our time trying to find ways to stop votes leaving us for Reform, but votes did not leave us for Reform. Votes left us for other progressive parties."

Additional political developments include discussions between the Welsh First Minister and Starmer regarding independence, concerns over Labour losing support among Welsh speakers, and a Welsh Labour minister resigning while urging Starmer to listen.

Drakeford's remarks come amid ongoing debates within the Labour Party about leadership and direction ahead of future elections.
