Settlement Reached in Abuse Case at St Patrick's Training School
A man alleging sexual and physical abuse at a Catholic-run school in west Belfast five decades ago is set to receive a £225,000 settlement. The individual, aged 63 and unnamed to protect his identity, claimed abuse by a staff member at St Patrick's Training School during the 1970s.
He initiated legal action against the De La Salle Order, which operated the school on Glen Road, the Diocese of Down and Connor, and the Department of Justice, citing failures to ensure his safety while in their care.
On Friday, the High Court in Belfast was informed that the parties had reached a resolution without any admissions of liability.
Details of the Allegations and Legal Claims
The case concerns the man's experiences as a teenager at St Patrick's after being sent there in 1976 due to truancy. During his two-year stay, he alleged that a member of the kitchen staff subjected him to physical assaults and sexual abuse.
He sought damages based on the defendants' alleged failure to implement safe supervision systems for children at the training school. His legal team also contended that insufficient measures were taken to properly vet employees working at the institution.
The claims included allegations of assault, battery, and trespass.
Court Proceedings and Settlement Terms
Mr Justice O'Hara was advised that the case against all three defendants would be stayed on agreed terms. The settlement includes payment of the man's legal fees.
Statements from Legal Representation
Speaking outside the court, the man's solicitor, Claire McKeegan of Phoenix Law, stated:
"Our client is relieved to see a conclusion to this difficult and painful process".
