Man Jailed for Extensive Child Pornography Collection
A man found in possession of a "colossal" amount of extreme child pornography has been sentenced to two years in prison.
Michael Walsh, 30, from Banff, Aberdeenshire, admitted to having tens of thousands of images and videos depicting young children, including babies and toddlers. Some of the material also involved animals.
The offenses occurred between 2021 and 2025.
Court Proceedings and Evidence
At Aberdeen Sheriff Court, Walsh, a first-time offender, was informed that a custodial sentence was the only appropriate course of action.
Fiscal depute Andrew McMann explained that police, acting on intelligence, conducted a search of Walsh's residence. During the search, equipment was seized, and the files containing images and videos were discovered.
McMann noted that the video content amounted to a total duration of 33 hours.
Defendant's Statement and Legal Representation
Walsh told police that he had located the material on the dark web and downloaded it, initially out of curiosity and later for gratification.
His defense lawyer, Stuart Beveridge, stated that Walsh had acted under compulsion and was "disgusted" by his actions.
Judicial Remarks and Sentencing
Sheriff Morag McLaughlin described the volume of material related to child sexual abuse as "colossal," with much of it at extreme levels.
"There was a 'colossal' volume of material related to child sexual abuse, much at extreme levels."
She added that despite Walsh being a first offender, custody was unavoidable given the gravity of the case.
"I could see no alternative to custody given the serious nature of the case."
The sheriff emphasized the need to express society's strongest disapproval and to acknowledge the significant harm caused by such crimes.
"I had to express in the strongest of terms society's disapproval, and recognise the huge harm such crimes caused."
Due to Walsh's guilty plea, the sheriff reduced the sentence from three years to two years.
Additionally, Walsh was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years.
