Man Sentenced for Online Sexual Offences Against Three Boys
A 23-year-old man, Cameron Mullen, has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison for multiple online child sexual offences involving three boys.
Mullen, who has no fixed address, admitted to engaging in sexual communication with three boys, inciting them to participate in sexual activities and distribute indecent images, as well as causing a child to watch sexual activity.
Initially, Mullen was granted bail shortly after his first court appearance; however, this bail was later revoked, and he has remained in custody since then.
The offences took place between June 2024 and January 2025.
Details of the Case and Court Proceedings
During sentencing at Dungannon Crown Court on Wednesday, the judge described Mullen's behaviour as indicative of a "predatory pattern."
When the case first appeared in court on 11 January 2025, police reported receiving a complaint from the mother of one boy who had been contacted by Mullen and sent sexual messages.
The court also heard that police were later contacted by the mother of another boy, who stated that her son had received sexually explicit images from Mullen.
At a subsequent hearing, the court was informed of a third boy who had been sent messages by Mullen requesting pictures of his genitals in exchange for money.
Mullen appeared at Dungannon Crown Court via video link from Maghaberry prison on Wednesday.
Although Mullen has no previous convictions, the court was informed that he had been reported previously for similar matters; however, none of those reports resulted in prosecution.
Judge's Remarks and Impact on Victims
In delivering the sentence, Judge Brian Sherrard highlighted the significant impact on one victim who has autism and is socially isolated.
"He was vulnerable, left sickened and terrified you would turn up at his school. He has developed suicidal ideation and anxiety," Judge Sherrard said.
The judge further noted the denial of sexual interest in children by Mullen, stating:
"As with nearly all paedophilic offending you deny any sexual interest in children. The evidence proves otherwise."
Judge Sherrard also addressed Mullen directly:
"You have still not provided an explanation for your offending. This is a plethora of overlapping sexual offending of three boys. They and their families are affected by your offending.
While this was online and not face to face, it is no less serious. Your use of social media helped make that a dangerous place. Your behaviour indicates a predatory pattern."
Sentence and Post-Release Measures
The judge imposed a prison sentence of two years and four months, with part of this term already served in custody during the ongoing case proceedings.
Additionally, the court heard that Mullen will be placed on the sex offender register and will be subject to a sexual offences prevention order for 10 years following his release.
