Life Sentence for Man Who Deliberately Infected Men with HIV

Adam Hall, 43, from Washington, Tyne and Wear, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years and 42 days after being found guilty of raping and intentionally infecting young men with HIV. Hall is only the second individual in the UK to be convicted of deliberately spreading the virus.

The verdict followed a four-month trial at Newcastle Crown Court, where Hall was convicted of offenses involving seven men, four of whom he raped. The victims ranged in age from 15 to their early twenties. Authorities believe there may be additional victims across England and have urged anyone affected to come forward.

Victims Describe Lasting Trauma

During the sentencing hearing, victims provided personal statements detailing the profound impact of Hall’s actions. The youngest victim recounted learning of his HIV-positive status immediately after getting off the school bus, marking a sudden and life-altering moment. Another victim described himself as having become “the shell of who I was” following the ordeal.

Predatory Behavior and Court Proceedings

Hall was characterized by a police officer who interviewed him as consistently “arrogant and dismissive.” He targeted younger, sexually inexperienced men, often meeting them in bars or through the dating app Grindr. Hall refused to appear in the dock for sentencing, a behavior the presiding judge, Edward Bindloss, noted as consistent with Hall’s disregard for the suffering he caused.

Judge Bindloss set the minimum custodial period at 23 years and 42 days, meaning Hall will not be eligible for parole until he is 67 years old.

Details of the Crimes and Investigation

The court heard that Hall, a former sex shop employee, was diagnosed with HIV in 2010 and managed his condition with medication to suppress his viral load. Between 2016 and 2023, he engaged in unprotected sex with multiple men, sometimes raping them, without disclosing his HIV status. His victims only became aware of their infections after undergoing testing themselves.

Detective Chief Inspector Emma Smith of Northumbria Police, who led the investigation, commented on Hall’s lack of remorse:

“He’s shown absolutely no remorse. He’s never apologised for his behaviour. We’ve interviewed him on a number of occasions and he provided a prepared statement via his legal representative and then no comment answers.”
“During interviews Hall came across as ‘arrogant and dismissive’. That continued into the trial, where he certainly didn’t show any remorse. In fact he actually suggested that some of the victims wanted him to pass HIV on to them, which absolutely was not the case.”
“Hall was a callous, calculating sexual predator.”

Victims’ Experiences and Impact

One victim described himself as “vulnerable” and “easily manipulated” upon meeting Hall, expressing a misplaced expectation of care and compassion:

“I think I was expecting him to take care of me. To have an awareness, and compassion. Really, I was just looking for salvation, for someone to love me.
“When I was diagnosed with HIV some of my closest friends stopped me going to their houses, they said they felt funny about germs. It was so hurtful that people who had known me my whole life could suddenly treat me so differently.”
“The whole thing is so unfair, he knew he was infected, and he thought he could get away with infecting me. That he was immune from any consequences. He didn’t even give me the option to take any pre- or post-HIV exposure treatment.”

Another victim, who had no prior experience in gay relationships, described himself as naive and profoundly affected by Hall’s actions:

“Prior to Hall I had not been involved in a gay relationship. He was my first experience, and I had nothing to compare it to. I would describe myself as naive.
“Hall came into my life, and I have been left a shell of who I was.”
“It has been years since Hall has been in my life, but my life has never gone back to how it was before I met him. I am still a HIV+ male who has to take lifelong medication to remain well – and undetectable.”

A further victim, who was raped while asleep, stated:

“Because of HIV my family live in fear of me.”

Ongoing Investigation and Support Services

Police are seeking to identify additional individuals who may have had sexual contact with Hall, who traveled extensively across England to meet men, including visits to County Durham, Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Manchester, and London.

Alice Wiseman, director of public health for Newcastle and Gateshead, emphasized the availability of health services for those concerned about previous contact with Hall:

“There is no judgment and your health and safety is our priority.”
