Fatal Crash During Alleged Impromptu Race

A woman tragically lost her life in a high-speed crash after her boyfriend reportedly engaged in an impromptu race with another driver through residential streets, a court has been told.

Jay Bayliss, 32, was driving a Volkswagen Polo at nearly three times the speed limit when he lost control and collided with a lamppost in Brynmawr, Blaenau Gwent, in July 2017.

During the incident, Bayliss was racing 49-year-old Neil Brooks while his girlfriend, Sophie Brimble, aged 20, was seated in the front passenger seat. Brimble died at the scene on King Street.

Court Proceedings and Charges

At Newport Crown Court on Monday, it was revealed that the crash occurred as Bayliss attempted to negotiate a bend while driving dangerously.

Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe stated:

"Bayliss had got himself involved in an impromptu race with a man called Neil Brooks.
"Bayliss was driving the car in front, Neil Brooks was driving behind him - both driving at excessive speed."

Brooks was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2019 at Cardiff Crown Court after being convicted of causing Brimble's death by dangerous driving, as well as causing serious injury to Bayliss by dangerous driving.

Details of the Race and Crash

Cobbe explained that the two men raced along the single carriageway road connecting Ebbw Vale and Brynmawr.

He described Bayliss’s behavior during the race as "aggressive," noting that when Brooks overtook him, Bayliss responded by driving the wrong way around a roundabout to regain the lead.

The prosecutor added:

"Bayliss was travelling way above the speed limit in the lead up to the collision, driving through excessive speeds in a residential area, in excess of 80mph.
"Brooks was a very short distance behind him, matching Bayliss for speed until the last few moments.
"Bayliss lost control, his car began to rotate and it slid towards and collided with a lamppost. The result was a catastrophe."

A collision investigator testified that Bayliss was estimated to be travelling close to 90mph in a 30mph zone when passing a petrol station shortly before the crash.

Cobbe emphasized to the jury:

"Both Bayliss and Brooks were driving at excessive speeds and racing along the A4047.
"That racing and driving at excessive speed contributed to his loss of control and of course causing the death of Sophie."

Ongoing Trial

The trial, which is anticipated to last three days, is ongoing.
