Man Arrested After Crossbow Fired at Police in Kilkeel Stand-Off

Man Arrested Following Crossbow Incident in Kilkeel

A 40-year-old man was arrested after firing a crossbow at police during a four-hour stand-off in Kilkeel, County Down.

Police responded to Moorfield Court at approximately 21:00 BST on Sunday after receiving reports of a man wearing a balaclava threatening residents on the street.

Upon arrival, officers were confronted by the man wielding a large sword, and crossbow bolts were discharged towards the police. Authorities stated that the bolts narrowly missed officers during what was described as a "sustained attack."

During the incident, police deployed Taser devices and baton rounds. The man was subsequently detained on suspicion of multiple offences, including attempted murder.

Police Commend Officers' Bravery

Superintendent Lynne Corbett praised the officers involved for their courage and professionalism throughout the incident.

"The ability to hold your nerve, remain calm and prioritise the safety of not only the public but also the suspect, in the face of continuous potentially life-threatening attack, is something that should not be underestimated," he said.

Corbett also confirmed that the man received an appropriate medical review following the event and will be questioned on suspicion of several offences, including attempted murder, making threats to kill, and possession of an offensive weapon.

"I would also like to express my thanks to local residents for the co-operation shown whilst we worked to bring the situation to a safe conclusion," he added.

Police Appeal for Information

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has requested that anyone with information related to the incident come forward and contact them.
