John Ashby, aged 32, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 14 years for the religiously aggravated rape and assault of a Sikh woman.

On Tuesday, Ashby admitted to multiple charges including rape, robbery, intentional strangulation, and religiously aggravated assault. During the proceedings at Birmingham Crown Court, an incident occurred when a member of the public approached the dock and said to Ashby,

“sort your shit out”
after which Ashby requested to see his barrister and altered his pleas approximately an hour later.
