Defense Team Withdraws in Murder Case

The legal team representing Brandon Rainey, the 29-year-old man accused of murdering Chloe Mitchell in Ballymena, has formally withdrawn from the case. Rainey is currently held on remand at Maghaberry Prison.

A senior barrister for Rainey made the application to withdraw at Belfast Crown Court on Thursday morning. Neil Connor KC explained the withdrawal was due to the legal team being "professionally compromised" and that the accused had also indicated he no longer wished to be represented by them.

The court was informed that the client-lawyer relationship had deteriorated significantly.

"I appreciate it's disappointing at this late stage," said the senior barrister, "and that he didn't make the application lightly."

Rainey has reportedly been in contact with other solicitors regarding potential new representation. However, the senior defence barrister noted that a solicitors' firm recently informed his junior counsel that they do not intend to accept instructions in this case, though ultimately the decision rests with the accused.

Madam Justice McBride accepted the application for withdrawal, describing the development as "a very unfortunate turn of events." She acknowledged the consequences of this action and highlighted the extensive efforts made to ensure the trial could proceed, especially as this case was advancing despite an ongoing barrister's strike.

Judge McBride scheduled a review hearing for Monday and advised Rainey,

"It is for you to see if you can secure alternate legal representation."

She instructed Rainey's former defence barristers to prepare their papers for any new solicitors who might take over the case. Additionally, she told Rainey that if he has spoken to solicitors, they should attend court on Monday.
