Community Protection Amid Middle East Tensions
Wales' First Minister, Eluned Morgan, emphasized the responsibility of leaders to mitigate potential tensions among communities connected to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. She expressed significant concern regarding community cohesion during this period.
Recent Developments in the Middle East Conflict
Reports indicate that Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in US-Israeli strikes. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Jordan.
Economic Impact and Regional Connections
Eluned Morgan highlighted the anticipated economic repercussions due to disruptions in oil trading stemming from the region's instability. She noted the presence of many individuals in Wales who have ties to the Middle East, including some currently visiting the area.
Travel Advisories and Airport Disruptions
The UK Foreign Office has issued warnings advising British citizens to avoid all but essential travel to Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE. Those already in these countries have been advised to seek shelter. Furthermore, several flights have been cancelled following missile strikes that caused damage to airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, resulting in multiple injuries.
Concerns Over Community Cohesion
Speaking on BBC Radio Wales' Sunday Supplement, Morgan reiterated her concerns about the potential impact of the conflict on community relations within Wales.
"I want to make sure that there is protection for all our communities and we will all have a role in making sure that we don't see those kind of tensions arise within our communities,"
Views on Iran and Nuclear Weapons
Morgan commented on the situation in Iran, stating that its people have endured a repressive regime for several decades. She asserted that it was "very clear" that Iran should never have been allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.
Call for De-escalation and Upholding International Law
Despite these concerns, Morgan stressed that the priority must be to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.
"We need to protect civilian life and I think we've got to be clear that instability in the Middle East will have an impact here in Wales.
I'm very clear that upholding international law should remain a red line for us,"
she added.
Strategic Importance of the Region
The Middle East plays a critical role in the global oil supply, with the Straits of Hormuz in the Gulf being the busiest oil shipping channel worldwide. Currently, international shipping has nearly halted at the entrance to the straits, and concerns over potential disruptions have already contributed to rising global oil prices.
Morgan noted the consequences of such disruptions.
"Closing the straits would obviously have a knock-on effect in terms of the trade and price of oil,"
she said.
