Free Bus Travel for Children in England This August
Children aged five to 15 will be able to travel free on participating local buses across England during August, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced on Thursday.
The £100 million fare-free initiative aims to alleviate some of the ongoing cost-of-living pressures faced by families.
Tariff Suspensions and Supermarket Cost Pressures
In addition to the bus scheme, the Labour government will suspend tariffs on over 100 product types, including biscuits, chocolate, dried fruit, and nuts.
While ministers are encouraging supermarkets to reduce prices for shoppers, they will not impose mandatory price caps on essential items such as eggs, bread, and milk.
Marks & Spencer's chief executive, Stuart Machin, criticized even voluntary cost-cutting schemes, calling them
"completely preposterous"
and advised the government to reduce tax and regulatory burdens instead, allowing businesses to compete more freely.
Government and Industry Perspectives
Treasury Secretary Dan Tomlinson told the BBC,
"it was right that the government looks across the board at what more we can do - both government levers but also talking to industry about the steps that they can take to support people with the cost of living".
The BBC has reached out to other political parties for their views on the free bus travel scheme.
Estimated Savings and Scheme Details
The government estimates that a family with two children making weekly return bus trips at £1.50 per fare could save approximately £27 in August.
Eligible children can make unlimited trips without needing to register to travel fare-free.
Rachel Reeves stated,
"As the war in Iran pushes prices up at home, my economic plan is the right one. I will continue to make the right choices, to protect households and businesses, and build a stronger and more secure Britain."
Reeves also engaged with the public via the social media platform TikTok, posting,
"I'm stepping in to make sure kids can still experience the little joys this summer."
Background and Regional Precedent
The bus scheme, running from 1 to 31 August, is modeled after a trial in the West of England that covers summer, Easter, and Christmas holidays.
Helen Godwin, Labour mayor of the West of England, commented,
"Kids Go Free in the West of England has seen around 1.4 million free journeys. It's brilliant that, after we have invested devolved funding to make a difference that people across the West can see and feel, the government is rolling out Kids Go Free nationally this August!"
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer added,
"By giving every child free bus travel throughout August and cutting tariffs on everyday food items, we're putting money back into people's pockets and making life that bit easier."
The government plans to publish the full list of products with suspended tariffs next week.
Tariffs are import taxes paid by companies within the supermarket supply chain. Grocers will be expected to pass on savings from reduced taxes to consumers through lower prices.
Fuel Duty Cut Extension
In a related announcement, the government confirmed that the 5p cut on fuel duty will be extended until the end of the year, rather than ending in September as previously planned.
This reduced tax rate on petrol and diesel was initially introduced by the former Conservative government following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which caused fuel prices to surge.
Since the onset of the US-Israel conflict in Iran, petrol and diesel prices have risen significantly due to disruptions in global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stated in the House of Commons,
"We're backing drivers by extending the freeze on fuel duty."
