DUP Initiates Independent Review Following Conviction of Jeffrey Donaldson
The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has announced it is commissioning an independent review to examine several issues that have emerged following the conviction of its former leader, Jeffrey Donaldson.
Donaldson was convicted this week on 18 counts of sexual abuse, including one count of rape. These offenses were committed against two women during their childhood.
A Northern Ireland investigation uncovered that two senior members of the DUP were informed of separate allegations against Donaldson five years ago. At that time, a young woman reported that she had been "exploited" by him.
The DUP stated that it responded promptly when Donaldson was first charged in 2024. The party's current leadership has expressed deep concern regarding the allegations that have recently come to light.
"As a party we believe in the rule of law and that criminal proceedings must take their full course. Justice has been served with the guilty verdicts against him," a DUP spokesperson said.
"The party leader Gavin Robinson, deputy leader Michelle McIlveen and party chairman are deeply concerned by allegations that have surfaced in recent days relating to inappropriate behaviour on behalf of Jeffrey Donaldson, and the indication that some may have had knowledge of inappropriate behaviour but which was never reported to the party officers."
The spokesperson added that further details about the independent review "will be announced shortly."
