Return to Normal Service on CalMac Routes

CalMac anticipates the restoration of "normal service" on several routes following weeks of disruption across its west coast network, as one of its key ferries completes repairs.

The MV Hebrides is scheduled to return to service later on the Little Minch after engineers addressed a leak in its bow visor, the front section of the vessel that can be raised to facilitate vehicle loading and unloading.

CalMac stated that by the end of the week, planned service levels and the usual vessels would be reinstated on the routes serving Coll, Colonsay, Mull, South Uist, and Tiree.

In April, the ferry operator faced significant challenges, with 10 vessels out of its 32-strong fleet unavailable due to technical faults, annual maintenance, or crewing shortages.

This disruption was a topic of discussion during political campaigning ahead of the recent Scottish election.

The MV Hebrides is expected to operate on the Little Minch route, connecting Skye, Harris, and North Uist, starting Wednesday afternoon.

CalMac also confirmed that other routes served by major vessels had already returned to normal operation.

Statements from CalMac Leadership

Chief Executive Duncan Mackison commented on the situation:

"The return of MV Hebrides gets us back to a welcome stable service across the routes served by major vessels and allows us to restore planned service levels to five islands.
This includes an increase in capacity and resilience to Coll, Tiree and Colonsay, greater capacity on Mull and the restoration of a direct service to South Uist."

Mackison acknowledged the difficulties faced in recent weeks, expressing gratitude towards staff and island communities:

"The past few weeks have been immensely challenging,"
"I thank our staff for their hard work and the island communities for their understanding of the situation."

Upcoming Vessel Returns

Two additional major vessels are expected to return from planned overhauls this month: the MV Isle of Lewis and the MV Finlaggan.

The MV Isle of Lewis, whose dry dock period was extended by three months to allow for extra steel work, is scheduled to undergo sea trials later this week.
