Farage Faces Inquiry Over £5m Gift

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, has been under intense scrutiny regarding a £5 million gift he received from a donor in 2024. Despite his insistence that the gift did not require declaration, several significant questions about his finances remain unresolved.

The substantial sum was provided shortly before Farage announced his candidacy for the 2024 general election. The donor was Christopher Harborne, a Thai-based crypto-billionaire known as a major political contributor.

In recent days, Farage has sought to divert attention from the gift, stating on multiple occasions that the funds were intended to cover his personal security expenses and expressing a preference to discuss the matter at a later time.

“Yeah, yeah, well we’ll talk about that any other time that you’d like,”

Farage said this while celebrating Reform UK’s first London council victory in Havering last week.

However, political opponents have capitalized on the revelation. Kevin Hollinrake, chair of the Conservative Party, has stated that Farage was

“obliged”
to declare the gift.

Farage may soon be subject to inquiries from the Electoral Commission or parliamentary authorities, both of which have received reports concerning the gift. On Wednesday, the parliamentary standards commissioner initiated an investigation into the matter.

Below are some of the key outstanding questions that the UK’s potential future prime minister may need to address.

Is This the Only Gift Received Before and After the 2024 Election?

On Sunday, inquired whether Farage had received any other gifts over the past decade. Reform UK did not provide a response. On Monday, Reform UK’s legal team responded to allegations of a separate earlier gift by stating,

“Mr Farage received no personal payment from Mr Harborne before the personal gift made in 2024.”

Reform UK did not answer separate questions regarding whether any additional gifts were made after 2024 or if other donors contributed gifts to Farage or other senior party figures.

Currently, the public lacks information on whether the £5 million gift was an isolated occurrence or part of a series of large donations from Harborne or other benefactors to Farage or other senior Reform UK members.

What Was the £5 Million Used For?

Following ’s inquiry, Farage initially did not respond but subsequently gave an interview to the Telegraph, asserting that the money

“was given to me so that I would be safe and secure for the rest of my life”.

He indicated the gift was necessary because he did not receive taxpayer-funded security.

However, two aspects of this claim raise questions. Zia Yusuf, former head of policy at Reform UK, noted that Farage was still receiving some public funding for his security as recently as 2025. In October of that year, Farage himself stated that the funding had been reduced by 75%.

Moreover, this public security support continued more than a year after Farage accepted the £5 million gift purportedly intended to cover his security indefinitely.

The exact amount of public money spent on Farage’s security remains unclear. In a recent interview, he stated that his private security costs

“costs several hundred, many hundred thousand pounds a year”,

without providing further details.

How Was the Clacton House Purchased?

Farage’s personal finances have also come under scrutiny regarding the purchase of an £885,000 home in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, by his partner, Laure Ferrari. Farage was elected as MP for Clacton at his eighth attempt. revealed that Ferrari bought the house in her name after Farage had previously claimed to be the buyer. A BBC investigation raised questions about the extent of her family’s wealth.

Ferrari further complicated matters by confirming in an interview that she did not finance the entire purchase through an inheritance from her family.

It would have been legal for Farage to lend or give her the funds, potentially avoiding £44,000 in additional stamp duty. However, in September last year, Farage stated,

“I haven’t lent money to anybody. I didn’t give her money. She comes from a very successful French family and she can afford it herself. It’s convenient, it works, and she loves it there.”

Have Other Senior Reform Figures Received Gifts?

While MPs traditionally consider any donations from donors as requiring declaration, Reform UK has emphasized that this was a personal gift made prior to Farage’s decision to stand for parliament.

The party’s deputy leader, Richard Tice, said,

“The state wouldn’t provide the funding, and this was a personal gift based around safety and security.”

It remains unclear whether this approach has been widespread within the party before or after the 2024 election, with other Reform UK MPs and senior figures reportedly receiving large sums that have not been declared to the Electoral Commission or parliamentary authorities.

Reform UK’s media team did not respond to most of ’s questions related to this article.
