Recognition for Space Communication
A British university scientist has received one of the United States' most prestigious astronomy awards for his efforts in sharing knowledge about space with the public.
James O'Donoghue, affiliated with the University of Reading, has created over 100 educational animations about space, which have collectively been viewed more than 400 million times worldwide.
Carl Sagan Medal Award
The American Astronomical Society (AAS) honoured the planetary scientist with the 2026 Carl Sagan Medal, acknowledging his "unique and impactful" communication aimed at the general public.
The award is named after the renowned US scientist Carl Sagan, who popularised astronomy through his 1980 documentary series Cosmos, bringing the universe into people's homes during the 20th century.

O'Donoghue's Perspective on Space Education
O'Donoghue expressed that space is "one of the few subjects that almost everyone is curious about, and that curiosity is worth taking seriously."
"When people understand what's happening on other planets, it changes how they see our own world.
Sharing that science as widely and accessibly as possible is just as important as doing it in the first place."
Additional Contributions and Outreach
In addition to his animations, O'Donoghue frequently contributes to national and local media outlets, including the BBC and PBS in the United States.
He also organises the University of Reading's annual Observe the Moon Night, a stargazing event that attracts hundreds of visitors to the campus each year.
AAS Statement on the Awardee
The AAS described O'Donoghue as an "extraordinarily creative and effective communicator" and a "recognised leader" in planetary science.
"He truly exemplifies the spirit of the Sagan Prize through the combination of his unique and impactful communication work with his scientific leadership," the society added.
Context of the Award
Past recipients of the Carl Sagan Medal have been honoured for their communication of research on subjects such as the origins of the Moon and the search for habitable planets beyond our solar system.
