Public Advised Against Water Activities at Saltcoats and Ardrossan

Members of the public have been warned not to bathe or paddle in the sea at Saltcoats and Ardrossan following a pollution incident earlier this week.

A burst pipe near the Saltcoats Sewage Pumping Station prompted concerns about water quality along the North Ayrshire coastline near these towns.

Investigation and Water Testing Underway

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has been investigating the incident and is conducting water quality tests, which currently indicate that the water is not suitable for bathing.

Scottish Water has been on site since 29 June to carry out repairs and stated that it needed to "make an emergency, temporary discharge of screened sewage to the sea at Stevenston."

Earlier this month, the public was also advised to avoid entering the sea at Portobello Beach in Edinburgh due to a pollution incident.

SEPA reported that routine water testing detected high levels of bacteria, posing a potential human health risk.
