Additional Financial Support Announced

West Devon Borough Council has announced funding of £300,682 to provide increased support for individuals facing financial difficulties. This funding is part of the Crisis and Resilience Fund, which replaced the Household Support Fund in April and aims to offer both immediate emergency assistance and long-term aid.

New Financial Advice and Support Team

The council plans to establish a dedicated Financial Advice and Support Team in collaboration with South Hams District Council. This team will assist residents in accessing various forms of financial help.

Support Services and Priority Groups

Support measures include crisis payments targeted at low-income households, with a particular focus on Devon care leavers as a priority group. Residents are eligible to apply for assistance with everyday essentials. Additionally, items such as electric blankets, warm clothing, and slow cookers will be made available later in the year to further support those in need.

The funding aims to help individuals build financial resilience, confidence, and independence.

Council Statements and Initiatives

Councillor Jane Elliott, the council's hub lead for community wellbeing, emphasized the importance of this support:

The council also intends to explore community energy schemes and collaborate with organizations that provide free energy advice to residents.

Allocation of Funds to Local Organizations

As part of the funding distribution, £20,000 has been allocated to West Devon CVS to assist in coordinating local support and connecting residents with available services. Additionally, Homemaker Southwest has been awarded £20,590 to offer welfare benefits and debt advice to individuals referred through the scheme.

Councillor Elliott added:

"This funding means we can offer help when it is needed most, whether that is emergency support, help with essential items or access to affordable options like the heating oil loan scheme."

Accessing Support

Residents seeking information about the fund and the application process can find details on the council's website.
