New Jura Ferry Project Approved with £19m Funding

A new ferry designated to serve Jura has received approval following the confirmation of £19 million in funding.

The Argyll and Bute Council Harbour Board announced that the Scottish government funding, allocated for the next two years, will support both the construction of a new ferry and any necessary infrastructure upgrades to accommodate it.

The ferry route connects Port Askaig on Islay with Feolin on Jura and has been operated by the MV Eilean Dhiura since 1998.

The harbour board indicated that the new ferry is expected to be in service for a minimum of 20 to 30 years.

Councillor Ross Moreland, chairman of the harbour board, stated:

"This will be a long-term project involving engagement with, and the support of, the community, local businesses, and partners.
"I look forward to hearing more details as the project develops."

Planning and Development Phase

Preparatory work will commence to determine the specific requirements for the new vessel. This will include assessments of capacity needs, fuel type, crew size, and considerations related to the maritime conditions of the route.

Additionally, modifications to the shoreside infrastructure at Feolin and Port Askaig will be evaluated to ensure compatibility with the new ferry.

Progress updates will be provided at forthcoming Harbour Board meetings.
