US Military Conducts Strikes on Southern Iran
The US military has announced new strikes on southern Iran, focusing on Iranian missile sites and boats attempting to deploy mines.
US Central Command issued a statement declaring the strikes were carried out in "self-defense" and aimed "to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces."
Central Command spokesperson Capt Tim Hawkins emphasized the US military's ongoing efforts to defend its forces while exercising restraint amid the current ceasefire.
"The US military continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire," Capt Tim Hawkins stated.
Context of the Strikes and Diplomatic Talks
The strikes targeted an area near Bandar Abbas, a southern Iranian port city housing a naval base situated on the Strait of Hormuz, according to the New York Times. Iranian state media reported that local officials in Bandar Abbas were investigating following reports of explosions.
Iran has not yet responded to the recent US strikes. The potential impact of these actions on any peace negotiations between the US and Iran remains uncertain.
These developments occur amid ongoing diplomatic efforts. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai acknowledged some progress in talks with the US but cautioned that a deal to end the conflict "is not imminent."
"It is correct to say that we have reached a conclusion on a large portion of the issues under discussion... But to say that this means the signing of an agreement is imminent - no-one can make such a claim," Baqai said.
Over the weekend, President Donald Trump suggested that the parties were close to reaching an agreement but later indicated that he had instructed negotiators "not to rush into" a deal. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism that an agreement could potentially be reached on Monday.
Despite tempered expectations from senior officials, Iran's top negotiator and foreign minister were reported by to be in Doha for discussions with Qatar's prime minister regarding a possible agreement with the US.
Background on the Conflict and Ceasefire
US and Iranian forces have observed a ceasefire since 8 April. Iran continues to maintain controls on Gulf shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while the US Navy has attempted to blockade Iranian ports.
The current tensions trace back to 28 February when the US and Israel launched extensive strikes on Iran, igniting conflict across the Middle East. Iran retaliated by attacking Israel and US-allied states in the Gulf and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, actions that caused a significant rise in global oil prices.
