Israeli Military Launches Strikes Across Lebanon
The Israeli military has initiated a series of strikes throughout Lebanon following a declaration by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel will escalate its attacks on Hezbollah.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that it targeted Hezbollah positions in the Bekaa Valley, located in eastern Lebanon, as well as additional locations across the country.
Netanyahu Declares War on Hezbollah
This military action came after Netanyahu released a video statement on Monday evening, asserting that Israel is "at war with Hezbollah" and that he had instructed the military to "deal them a crushing blow."
"Israel is at war with Hezbollah," Netanyahu said. "I have given the military instructions to deal them a crushing blow."
Ceasefire Extension and Ongoing Concerns
Earlier in the month, Lebanon and Israel agreed to extend a 45-day ceasefire, although sporadic fighting has persisted. There are concerns in Beirut that the recent Israeli strikes could escalate to include Lebanon's capital city.
Casualties and Military Statements
Netanyahu stated that Israel's offensive against Hezbollah had "eliminated... over 600 terrorists." He added:
"But what this requires of us now is to increase the strikes, to increase the intensity."
Since the ceasefire agreement was signed on 16 April, Israeli attacks have mainly been concentrated in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces remain stationed. Israel claims that drones and rockets have been launched from this area.
Geographical Expansion of Strikes
The Bekaa Valley, targeted on Monday evening, is situated in eastern Lebanon near the Syrian border. This marks an expansion of Israel's military campaign.
Regional Context and Iranian Position
The escalation coincides with the Iranian government’s insistence that any emerging peace agreement with the United States must include a comprehensive ceasefire on all fronts of the regional conflict.
Israel’s government has opposed halting the fighting against Hezbollah.
Casualty Figures and Displacement
Since the initial ceasefire with Lebanon was agreed, ten Israeli soldiers have been killed. In Lebanon, over 400 people have died due to intense Israeli bombardment during the same period, including numerous paramedics and emergency service personnel.
Israel has issued near-daily orders for residents in new southern Lebanese areas to evacuate their homes, contributing to the displacement of more than one million people.
Origins of the Current Conflict
Lebanon became involved in the current hostilities after the United States and Israel initiated a war against Iran on 28 February. Hezbollah, an ally of Iran, retaliated by firing rockets into Israel following an Israeli strike that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Israel responded with an air campaign across Lebanon and a ground invasion. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, Israeli attacks have resulted in over 3,000 deaths.
Lebanese Government’s Position
Lebanon’s government has been attempting to disarm Hezbollah but emphasizes that a ceasefire is necessary to complete what it describes as a complex process.
