UK Increases Military Presence in Middle East Amid Iranian Threats
The United Kingdom will send additional troops and air defence systems to the Middle East to bolster defensive measures against Iranian attacks, Defence Secretary John Healey announced during his visit to Gulf nations.
Healey stated that extra air defence teams and equipment will be deployed to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait, while the deployment of Typhoon jets in Qatar will be extended. Currently, approximately 1,000 British military personnel are engaged in the defence of the Gulf and Cyprus.
"My message to Gulf partners is: Britain's best will help you defend your skies."
The UK government maintains a position of engaging in "defensive action" in the Middle East conflict. However, this stance has drawn criticism from former US President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reiterated on Monday that the UK will not be drawn into the war but remains committed to defending its interests and allies in the region.
Details of the Deployment and Visits
During his visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Bahrain, Defence Secretary Healey announced the deployment of additional air defence systems and associated teams to these countries, as well as to Kuwait.
At Dukhan air base in Qatar, Healey confirmed the extension of the UK Typhoon jets' deployment. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Starmer announced that four additional Typhoon jets would be sent to Qatar, following the establishment of the Royal Air Force's joint UK-Qatari Typhoon squadron in January.
Healey also informed Saudi Arabia's defence minister that the UK will deploy the Sky Sabre air defence missile system to Saudi Arabia this week, along with teams to operate it. The Sky Sabre system comprises radars, a control node, and missile launchers capable of intercepting munitions and aircraft. It will be integrated into the broader regional air defence network, according to the Ministry of Defence.
Additionally, the UK's Lightweight Multirole Missile launcher, a short-range air defence system, has already been deployed to Bahrain, accompanied by UK experts who will assist in integrating the system into Bahraini defences. The Rapid Sentry ground-based air defence missile system has also arrived in Kuwait.
"Iran's aggressive attacks continue to threaten our allies and interests in the Middle East.
That's why the UK has been flying defensive missions since day one of this conflict to protect British interests and allies – and today we're delivering further support by extending our UK jets in Qatar and deploying extra air defence teams and systems to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait."
Healey also commended the efforts of Gulf partners, describing them as "heroic."
"We will stand by our long-term partners in the Middle East and continue to push for a swift resolution to this conflict."
UK's Position on Ground Troops and US Relations
Prime Minister Starmer emphasized on Monday that UK troops will not be deployed on the ground in Iran.
"This is not our war and we're not going to get drawn into it,"
he said in response to reporters' questions.
Previously, the UK granted permission for the US to use British military bases for "defensive" strikes on Iranian missile sites. However, Starmer denied a request for UK bases to be used in the initial US-Israeli strikes against Iran in February.
Former President Trump has criticized the UK's involvement in the conflict, as well as that of other NATO allies.
On Tuesday, Trump specifically mentioned the UK, stating that countries not participating in the initial strikes on Iran should secure their own oil supplies from the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote:
"All of those countries that can't get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT.
You'll have to start learning how to fight for yourself."
