Water Levels at Queen's Valley Remain Stable, Jersey Water Advises Caution

Island residents are being encouraged to use water prudently following a surge in demand during June's heatwave, which reached its highest point since the 2022 drought.

Jersey Water reported that nearly 159 million litres (35 million gallons), representing close to 5% of stored water, were consumed last week as temperatures peaked at 39.2C (103F) on Thursday, 25 June.

Water levels at the Queen's Valley and Val de la Mare reservoirs are currently at 89% capacity and described as being in a "good position". However, officials cautioned that levels could decline rapidly if another heatwave occurs.

"Water supplies are finite," a spokesperson stated, noting that when reservoirs are full, supplies last for approximately 120 days, "so every drop counts."

Customers have been urged to use water wisely and avoid waste, with the reminder that "small changes by everyone make a big difference."

Jersey Water also confirmed that its desalination plant located at La Rosière, Corbiere, is prepared to increase supply if necessary. They emphasized that reducing water usage now would "make the quickest difference and help avoid restrictions later in the summer/autumn."

Suggested water-saving measures include using water from washing fruit and vegetables to irrigate garden plants and avoiding leaving taps running while brushing teeth.
