Trial Commences for Alleged Attack Plot
A 21-year-old Austrian man has appeared in court south of Vienna, standing trial for allegedly planning and preparing a jihadist attack on a Taylor Swift concert scheduled in the Austrian capital in August 2024.
Identified only as Beran A, he was escorted into the courtroom in Wiener Neustadt wearing a blue shirt and handcuffs to face charges including terrorism and other related offences.
He was apprehended following a tip-off from the CIA shortly before Swift's opening concert in Vienna in 2024.
As a consequence, all three sold-out shows by the US superstar at Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium were cancelled.
More than 195,000 attendees had been expected across these events.
Thousands of disappointed fans gathered in the streets of Vienna, singing and exchanging Taylor Swift-themed friendship bracelets.

Legal Proceedings and Charges
Anna Mair, the lawyer representing Beran A, stated that her client would plead guilty in part.
Vienna prosecutors have charged him with membership in a terrorist organisation and with preparing and planning the attack on the Taylor Swift concert.
Additional accusations include declaring allegiance to and disseminating online propaganda for the jihadist group Islamic State (IS), manufacturing explosives, and attempting to illegally purchase weapons.
Beran A is suspected of obtaining instructions via the internet on how to construct a shrapnel bomb using the explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP).
The type of shrapnel bomb was described as "specific to IS attacks," according to the official statement.
Prosecutors allege that Beran A received training from other Islamic State members on handling explosives and made several attempts to purchase various firearms and a hand grenade through illegal dealers, intending to import these weapons into Austria.
Authorities state that Beran A began planning the attack no later than 21 July 2024 and was arrested on 7 August, one day before the first concert.
Co-Accused and Related Cases
Also on trial in Wiener Neustadt is another 21-year-old man, named as Arda K, accused of being part of the same Islamic State cell as Beran A. They face allegations of planning additional attacks in Mecca, Istanbul, and Dubai.
Both men, who were teenagers at the time of the alleged plots, face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
In a related case last year, a teenager in Germany received an 18-month suspended sentence for assisting in the preparation of the foiled attack.
Prosecutors revealed that the Syrian national, named Mohammed A, helped Beran A by translating bomb-making instructions from Arabic and connecting him with an IS member.
The trial is expected to continue until late May.
Taylor Swift’s Response and Tour Impact
Taylor Swift, one of the world's biggest superstars, learned about the bomb plot in Vienna while en route to Austria, as revealed in a documentary on the Eras Tour.
"The tour narrowly 'dodged a massacre situation' when the CIA identified a plot to explode a bomb at the concert," she said.
Speaking to select media, including the BBC, at the New York premiere of her six-part Disney+ documentary, she reflected on her career and the new fears she faced.
"After performing for 20 years, being afraid that something is going to happen to your fans is new," she said.
Following the incident in 2024, Swift posted on social media:
"Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives."
The 149-show Eras Tour began in March 2023 and concluded in December 2024.
It spanned five continents, selling over 10.1 million tickets and becoming the first tour in history to surpass $1 billion (£786 million) in ticket sales.
