Casualties and Damage in Dnipro

At least seven people lost their lives in Russian strikes across Ukraine overnight, including five fatalities in the central city of Dnipro, where officials reported that an apartment building was struck.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the latest attack persisted "practically all night," while rescue teams continued searching for survivors beneath the rubble in Dnipro on Saturday morning.

Air Defense and Drone Activity

During the intense assault, British jets were scrambled from Romania after Russian drones were detected near the border. However, the UK Ministry of Defence denied reports claiming that British aircraft had shot down any drones.

Concurrently, Ukraine conducted some of its longest-range drone strikes deep inside Russian territory.

Incidents in Russian Cities

In Yekaterinburg, nearly 1,000 miles (1,600 km) from Ukraine's border, the regional governor reported that six individuals were injured when a building was hit. Meanwhile, in nearby Chelyabinsk, a local official stated that drones targeting an industrial facility were intercepted.

Additional Targets in Ukraine

Russian missiles and drones also targeted the northern city of Chernihiv, where officials confirmed two deaths, as well as the cities of Odesa and Kharkiv.

Ukrainian authorities reported repelling the vast majority of over 600 Russian drones, marking what appears to be the largest attack in several days.

"The Russians' tactics have not changed: strike drones, cruise missiles, and a significant amount of ballistics. Most of the targets are ordinary infrastructure in cities. Residential buildings, energy, and enterprises have been damaged."

These remarks were posted by President Zelensky on social media.

Russian Defense Claims and Territorial Control

Russia's Ministry of Defence stated it had shot down 127 drones over more than a dozen regions.

The ministry also claimed to have taken control of Bochkove, a village in the Kharkiv region, on Saturday morning, according to the state-linked news agency Tass.

Bochkove is located near Ukraine's northern border with Russia, where Russian forces have repeatedly attempted to advance southward toward the city of Kharkiv.

Ukrainian authorities have not commented on Russia's claim of control over the village, and has not independently verified the report.

Romania's Response and NATO Involvement

Separately, Romania's defence ministry announced it was investigating "the fall of an object" on its territory near the Ukrainian border during the Russian attack.

The ministry also clarified a previous statement that had incorrectly suggested British jets based in Romania had shot down Russian drones, which would have been a first.

It confirmed that British jets "did not enter Ukrainian airspace" and "no drones were shot down by the aircraft, because the drones did not breach Romanian airspace."

A NATO official added that British Typhoon jets "had the authority to engage the potential threats," but "engagement was not required as the targets were neutralised outside Romanian airspace."

Diplomatic Efforts Amidst Conflict

With peace talks between Russia and Ukraine stalled, Ukraine continues to seek international support for its military efforts.

On Friday, President Zelensky met with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, marking their second meeting in recent months as Ukraine aims to strengthen ties with Gulf allies.

Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries have shown renewed interest in Ukraine's drone warfare capabilities following recent Iranian attacks.

The crown prince and Zelensky discussed enhancing air defence cooperation and joint military production, according to an official account of the meeting.
