Paris mayor reports 'increase in mortality' due to heatwave
Paris mayor Emmanuel Gregoire reported an “increase in mortality” in the capital attributed to the ongoing heatwave, though he did not provide specific figures, according to AFP.
He stated that “pretty much all our indicators are in a critical state,” including calls to emergency medical services, fire brigade responses, emergency room admissions, and deaths, during an interview on local television.

Morning opening: The heatwave continues
Are you prepared for another day with temperatures well above 30°C?
The European heatwave of 2026 is gradually moving eastward but continues to impact millions across the continent.
The UK remains under a red extreme heat warning; in France, 72 out of 96 mainland departments are covered by a similar alert, and 17 Italian cities are also affected—both figures higher than those reported yesterday.
Temperatures have already reached 33°C in Nantes and 31°C in Paris before 10 a.m. local time.
Forecast highs include 39°C in Paris, 36°C in Cologne, Germany, and Bologna, Italy; 35°C in Brussels, Belgium; 33°C in Berlin; and 31°C in London.
Meanwhile, cities such as Bratislava, Budapest, Prague, and Warsaw are anticipating temperatures around 40°C over the weekend and into Monday.
We will continue to provide updates on how Europe is managing these extreme temperatures.
You are invited to share your experiences and strategies for coping with the heat.
Today is Thursday, 25 June 2026. Jakub Krupa reporting for Europe Live.
