Engine Room Fire Causes Power Blackout on Kommandor Susan During Sea Trials

A catastrophic engine failure caused a fire and complete power blackout on the Kommandor Susan during sea trials in January 2025. The MAIB report highlighted the use of non-genuine engine parts in a 2019 overhaul and stressed the need for monitoring critical maintenance.

Engine Failure and Fire Incident

A "catastrophic" engine failure led to a fire onboard the Kommandor Susan while the crew was conducting sea trials in the Firth of Forth, according to an investigation report.

The vessel experienced a "complete power blackout," lost propulsion, and began drifting after departing from Leith in Edinburgh on 25 January 2025.

Investigation Findings

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) report detailed that the crew heard a

"loud bang"
shortly before the ship's fire alarm was triggered.

Following the extinguishing of the fire, partial power was restored. With assistance from two tugboats, the Kommandor Susan was able to return safely to Leith. There were no injuries reported.

Safety Concerns and Maintenance Issues

The MAIB identified key safety concerns, notably the use of

"non-genuine" engine components
during a major overhaul conducted in 2019.

After the fire, the engine was rebuilt using original manufacturer's parts.

While the MAIB made no formal recommendations from the investigation, it communicated with the ship's previous owner emphasizing the importance of monitoring

"all critical maintenance activities"
.

Vessel Background

The Kommandor Susan was constructed in 1999 as an offshore supply vessel. In 2019, it was converted for geophysical survey operations.
