Ted Turner, Media Pioneer, Passes Away at 87

Media mogul Ted Turner, renowned for pioneering the modern 24-hour news cycle with the launch of CNN, has died at the age of 87, the network confirmed.

In 1980, Turner established Cable News Network as the first dedicated rolling news channel, which rapidly became a pivotal element of the media landscape.

"Ted was an intensely involved and committed leader, intrepid, fearless and always willing to back a hunch and trust his own judgement," CNN CEO and chairman Mark Thompson said in a statement.

"He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN. Ted is the giant on whose shoulders we stand, and we will all take a moment today to recognize him and his impact on our lives and the world."

CNN's Early Challenges and Breakthroughs

Although CNN initially faced difficulties, it demonstrated its value by delivering rapid and continuous updates on major events such as the 1981 assassination attempt on US President Ronald Reagan and the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster.

The network solidified its reputation with live, rolling coverage from Iraq during the 1990-1991 Gulf War.

President George H.W. Bush once remarked that he learned more from CNN than from the CIA.

CNN's success inspired the creation of other news channels, including Fox News, launched in 1996 by Turner's longtime rival Rupert Murdoch.

Ted Turner's Broader Media Empire

CNN was only one facet of Turner's extensive media holdings. He began his career by taking over the family billboard business after his father’s suicide, then acquired a radio station in Atlanta, Georgia.

Within ten years, that station became the foundation of the Turner Broadcasting System (TBS), establishing Turner as one of the United States’ leading media moguls.

His television empire expanded to include TBS, TNT, Turner Classic Movies, and Cartoon Network.

In 1985, Turner made a brief and costly $1.5 billion (£1.1 billion) acquisition of MGM film studios. During the 1990s, he purchased film and TV companies Castle Rock Entertainment and New Line Cinema before his company merged with Time Warner.

Achievements Beyond Media

Outside of media, Turner was a world-class yachtsman, winning the America's Cup in 1977. He also owned several sports teams, including the Atlanta Braves baseball team, Atlanta Hawks basketball team, and Atlanta Thrashers ice hockey team.

Turner was married to actress Jane Fonda from 1991 until 2001.
