Telstra Outage Causes Widespread Disruptions Nationwide

A significant outage at Telstra, Australia's largest telecommunications provider, resulted in cancelled train services, loss of mobile coverage for thousands of customers, and an investigation into emergency calls that failed to connect.

Telstra's Chief Financial Officer, Michael Ackland, issued an apology for the incident, which began at 04:30 local time on Wednesday and impacted "some mobile calls and data services." The disruption lasted approximately 12 hours before full service was restored.

Ackland attributed the outage to a software defect related to time-keeping servers located at data centres in Sydney and Melbourne, explicitly stating that it was not caused by a cyber attack.

Australia's Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, described the outage as "deeply concerning."

Telstra characterized the outage as "intermittent" but acknowledged its "national" impact.

Emergency Services and Customer Welfare

Ackland confirmed that Telstra conducted welfare checks on customers who had attempted to call emergency services during the outage, with six individuals requiring immediate assistance.

He noted that back-up systems designed to reroute emergency calls through other mobile carriers largely functioned as intended.

When questioned about public confidence in Australia's largest mobile network, Ackland stated:

"Australia can absolutely have faith in its biggest telco... we take these outages very very seriously. Our investment in resilience and cyber security and redundancy in our network is significant but it is a big and complex network and from time to time, issues do occur."

It was confirmed that welfare checks were being conducted for approximately three dozen emergency calls that failed to connect, although the "core triple-zero system remains operational."

Government Response and Regulatory Investigation

Communications Minister Anika Wells announced that the Australian Communications and Media Authority, the country's telecommunications regulator, will investigate the outage.

Impact on Transport and Businesses

In Victoria, all regional train services were cancelled due to the outage, while some regional services in New South Wales experienced disruptions. National freight services were also affected.

Payment systems were impacted as well, with approximately 80,000 businesses using the Tyro app experiencing outages.

Context of Previous Telecom Outages

Last September, a systems outage at Optus, Australia's second largest telecommunications company, resulted in three deaths after hundreds of people across more than half the country were unable to contact emergency services for 13 hours.

Optus was subsequently fined following a 2023 outage that left thousands unable to reach emergency services.
