The Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese is due to meet Pacific leaders including the PM of Papua New Guinea, James Marape today in Brisbane, ahead of the state of origin decider.

Albanese to host three Pacific leaders in Brisbane

Anthony Albanese will host three Pacific prime ministers in Brisbane as part of efforts to strengthen Australia’s influence in the region amid growing concerns over China’s expanding presence, according to Australian Associated Press.

The meetings will include Papua New Guinea’s James Marape, Tonga’s Lord Fakafānua, and Samoa’s La’auli Leuatea Schmidt. Following the bilateral talks, all four leaders will attend a Pacific rugby league event in Brisbane.

Additionally, Albanese will host the prime ministers at the State of Origin decider held at Suncorp Stadium.

The prime minister recently returned from a successful visit to Fiji and the Solomon Islands, where he signed a significant defence agreement with Fiji.

The Ocean of Peace Alliance, which may be extended to other Pacific nations, establishes Fiji as Australia’s fourth official ally.

Henry Ivarature of the Australian Pacific Security College commented on the ongoing discussions aimed at expanding Australia’s presence in neighbouring islands, describing it as the beginning of a new era of regional strength.

“I think Australia has learned to listen and it has learned to accept the way Pacific governments work. It has been patient,”

Ivarature added that the focus will now shift to maintaining trust over an extended period. The Brisbane discussions are expected to concentrate on expanding military cooperation and aid initiatives in the Pacific, particularly as China emerges as a significant geopolitical challenge.
