Arrest and Charges

Simon Peter Carman was arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport in the early hours of Saturday, according to police reports.

An Australian man has been charged with murder following the discovery of the body of a 17-year-old girl in a suitcase in Thailand.

Discovery of the Victim

Authorities in the coastal city of Pattaya reported finding Tunchanok Donhomla's body "stuffed" inside a suitcase that had been discarded near a railway track early on Saturday.

Thai police indicated that Carman was apprehended at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, approximately 150 kilometers north of Pattaya, as he was allegedly "preparing to flee the country." He denies the charges against him.

In a message addressed to the victim's family after his arrest, Carman stated:

"I feel bad for what happened to your daughter. It was out of my control."

Investigation Details

Pattaya City Police confirmed that the 17-year-old had been reported missing at 17:00 local time (12:00 GMT) on Friday.

According to a statement released on social media, police reviewed CCTV footage showing Carman entering a condominium with Donhomla at 03:34 on Thursday. Later that evening, he was seen leaving alone, "carrying a large suitcase." The statement further noted that Carman loaded the suitcase onto a motorbike and drove towards a railway line.

Officers detained Carman at the airport at 01:15 on Saturday. Approximately 15 minutes later, the teenager's naked body was discovered inside the suitcase.

Suspect's Denial and Claims

Carman has denied murder and additional charges related to moving or concealing a body and taking a minor for sexual purposes. He claimed that he acted in self-defense.

Media reports indicate that Carman told police he had agreed to pay Donhomla 1,000 baht (£23, US$30, A$43) for sexual services, but an argument arose when they returned to his apartment and he offered only 500 baht.

Thai police told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that Carman also claimed Donhomla had "disappeared from the room" while he was asleep.

In a video recorded while in custody, Carman addressed Donhomla's family, stating:

"I feel bad for what happened to your daughter. It was out of my control."
"I know you'll be very sad, upset… same [as] me."
"Please tell other girls… just to be careful."

Physical Evidence and Police Statements

Colonel Anek Srathongyoo, Superintendent of the Pattaya City Police Station, told the ABC that Carman "has fingernail scratches across his body that are consistent with a struggle, but he denies killing her."

In another police video, Carman is seen responding to questions about the scratch marks, saying:

"I think it's a spider; they always get in here."

Victim's Background and Family Reactions

Donhomla's family informed the ABC that she was an only child living with her father and step-mother in the province of Kalasin, about 480 kilometers northeast of Pattaya. The teenager, known by the nickname Cake, had told her parents she intended to go on holiday with a friend and had traveled to Pattaya on 16 June.

Her father, Thongchai Donhomla, expressed his sorrow over his daughter's death:

"My daughter had no mother, so whenever she wanted anything, she would find a way herself, and she always helped me too."

Her step-mother, Oradee Bussarakum, shared her grief:

"We were scared. We just hoped it wouldn't turn out the way we feared. Now our eyes are swollen from crying."
"I just want him executed ... I even asked the police if I could hit him, if I could beat him."

Legal Consequences

If convicted of murder, Carman could face the death penalty under Thai law.
