Industry Giants Visit Heathcoat Fabrics
NASA and Elon Musk's SpaceX were among the major space industry leaders to visit a factory that supplies parachute materials essential for cosmic exploration.
Heathcoat Fabrics, located in Tiverton, Devon, has played a crucial role in providing materials used to decelerate spacecraft during planetary landings or their return to Earth.
The parachute engineering conference, which included delegates from Blue Origin—known for its all-female spaceflight in April 2025 that utilized fabrics from this factory—was a key event for the industry.

Heathcoat Fabrics’ Role and Legacy
Peter Hill, director at Heathcoat Fabrics, expressed pride in the company's contribution to space innovation in Devon.
"We're proud to be putting Devon on the map as a hub for space innovation."
He emphasized the opportunity the conference provided to highlight the team's exceptional work supporting missions that advance human achievement.
"This is a chance to showcase the incredible work our team does to support missions that push the boundaries of human achievement."
Hill noted the company's longstanding history in parachute fabric production, dating back to before World War Two, and its evolution to supporting missions to Mars.
"More and more companies are taking things to space and need to bring them back again,"
he added, explaining that this includes pharmaceuticals manufactured in microgravity conditions that must be parachuted safely back to Earth.

Hill also mentioned ongoing collaborations with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the US Department of Defence focusing on chemical warfare protection, including protective clothing and lightweight parachute systems.
He concluded by stating the company's commitment to innovation to meet the demands of an evolving market.
"We're working with the MOD and the US Department of Defence on chemical warfare protection - protective clothing and lightweight parachute systems."
"We would continue to focus on innovation to meet the needs of an evolving market."
Industry Perspectives
Rob Sinclair from Blue Origin attended the conference and highlighted the success of parachutes made from Heathcoat Fabrics' materials.
"We've had Gayle King and Katy Perry come back safely to Earth with parachutes using fabric that was made right here in Devon."
Clara O'Farrell from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory also acknowledged the firm's critical role in NASA's missions.
She described her experience as fortunate to be part of the team that landed the Mars Perseverance Rover.
"We partnered with the guys here to manufacture the fabric that we used to assemble the parachute that successfully landed that Rover on Mars.
We hope to continue that partnership in future space missions."
