OpenAI Discontinues Sora Video-Generation App

OpenAI has ceased operations of its artificial intelligence (AI) video-generation application, Sora, less than two years after its launch, which initially garnered significant attention for producing realistic clips from simple prompts.

End of Content Partnership with Disney

Simultaneously, OpenAI will also conclude its content partnership with entertainment conglomerate Disney, according to information obtained by the BBC.

OpenAI informed the BBC on Wednesday that it has discontinued Sora to concentrate on other initiatives, including robotics developments aimed at assisting people with real-world, physical tasks.

A spokesperson for The Walt Disney Company commented on the decision:

"We respect OpenAI's decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere".

The spokesperson further noted that Disney plans to collaborate with other AI platforms to explore responsible uses of the technology while ensuring intellectual property rights are not infringed.

Sora's Launch and Industry Concerns

Launched in 2024, Sora attracted global interest due to the high quality of its AI-generated videos. However, the application also raised concerns regarding potential copyright violations and the impact it might have on the media industry.
