Anthropic to Meet with White House Over AI Tool Suspension

Executives from the artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic are scheduled to meet with senior officials from the White House amid renewed national security concerns related to the company's latest AI tool release.

The meeting is planned for Monday in Washington DC and will involve Anthropic executives and representatives from the US Department of Commerce, which is led by Secretary Howard Lutnick, according to two individuals familiar with the matter.

This development follows Anthropic's decision to block all public access to its most recent AI tool release on Friday, a product the company has previously described as "too powerful." The decision came after the US government prohibited Anthropic from granting access to the technology to any foreign nationals.

Details on the AI Tool: Fable 5 and Mythos 5

The AI tool in question is known as Fable 5 or Mythos 5. Fable 5 is a version equipped with additional safeguards and was made available to the public, while Mythos 5 includes different controls and is accessible only to a select group of organizations.

Both versions represent an iteration of Claude Mythos, a new AI model from Anthropic that attracted attention when the company initially provided preview and testing access in April to a limited number of organizations, including certain US government departments.

Anthropic's chief executive officer, Dario Amodei, is expected to attend the meeting alongside Secretary Lutnick, a source indicated.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment on the meeting. Representatives from the Department of Commerce and Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment.

Concerns and Government Response

When Anthropic released a version of Mythos to the public last week, the company acknowledged the associated risks.

"Fable's capabilities exceed those of any model we've ever made generally available"

Within days of the release, the US government announced it had "become aware" of a potential "jailbreak," a vulnerability that could allow users to manipulate the AI tool to perform unintended actions.

Anthropic stated on Friday that it had only received "verbal evidence" regarding the alleged jailbreak vulnerability.

Context of Anthropic-Government Relations

The current disagreement between Anthropic and the government is the latest in a series of tensions this year. Earlier, Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Defense over disputes concerning the permissible uses of its AI models.

However, relations appeared to improve recently when the company held a meeting with senior White House officials, which was described as "productive." The upcoming Monday meeting with the Department of Commerce is expected to involve the presentation of additional documentation related to the alleged issue, according to one of the individuals familiar with the situation.

It remains uncertain whether Anthropic will be able to restore public access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 following the meeting.
