Amazon Introduces Alexa+ to Reinvigorate UK User Interaction

“Commiserations, mate, Chelsea lost 3-0 in the Champions League last night against Paris Saint-Germain,” Alexa says, addressing a waiting Blues fan. This demonstration of personality and contextual understanding exemplifies Amazon’s ambition to re-engage Britons with their millions of Alexa devices, aiming to restore Alexa’s position as a leading voice assistant rather than a simple timer.

Following its early access release in the US last year, the eagerly anticipated generative AI upgrade, Alexa+, is now launching in the UK. It supports eight years of existing devices installed in over half of UK households. Given that the UK is Amazon’s most engaged market and home to more than 40 accents across the UK and Ireland, this “next-generation ambient AI assistant” faces significant challenges.

The service is immediately available on new purchases of Amazon’s latest Echo and Show devices, with updates planned for existing devices. Daniel Rausch, Amazon’s head of Alexa and Echo, assures that the rollout will progress faster than it did in the US.

Natural Language and Personalized Experience

“We’ve eliminated the need for that Alexa-speak, such as ‘turn on bedroom lamp two’, you can just speak naturally,”
Rausch explained.
“Alexa+ knows you, your home, your family. And is available anywhere, any time, as life does not happen in a chat box.”

Much of Alexa+’s experience has been developed in the UK, yet limited demonstrations revealed some shortcomings, such as mispronouncing player names and using “zero” instead of “nil” for football scores. Amazon acknowledges there is still work to be done.

Pricing and Reception

The upgrade is free during its “early access” phase, but it remains uncertain whether users will pay £19.99 per month for Alexa+ or opt for an Amazon Prime subscription that includes it. Reception in the US, where Alexa+ has been available, has been mixed, with critics noting issues of inconsistency and fabrication—common challenges for generative AI since its inception.

Increased Engagement and Expanded Capabilities

Despite criticisms, Rausch reports that engagement with Alexa+ has grown month over month, including a 25% rise in music listening and a 50% increase in smart home control, attributed to reduced friction and enhanced capabilities. Amazon highlights Alexa+’s ability to perform complex, multi-step commands such as turning off lights, lowering the thermostat, locking doors, and activating the alarm in one instruction.

Personalization and Agentic AI Features

Alexa+ is designed to remember individual preferences, including favorite teams, players, movies, and music, and can differentiate among family members. Additionally, Amazon is advancing into agentic AI by integrating with partner services to execute real-world tasks on users’ behalf, such as ordering takeaways, booking restaurant reservations based on calendar availability, or remembering occasions like a mother’s birthday and purchasing gifts from Amazon.

Whether these features will revitalize smart speaker sales, which have experienced stagnation and decline, remains to be seen.

Safety and Responsible AI Development

Incorporating powerful generative AI into the ambient environment of millions of homes, accessible to all family members including children—whom Alexa+ understands better—introduces significant risks. However, Rausch emphasizes Amazon’s preparedness.

“With years of experience of building consumer AI products we know you have to intentionally build guard rails into a product from the beginning, so that it doesn’t answer problematic questions. Someone is trying to break it every day. It’s not something we crow about, but that’s why we have the Responsible AI team. That’s their entire job.”
