Meningitis Vaccination Extension in Kent
Meningitis B vaccinations will be extended to Year 11 pupils at schools where older students have already received them, UK health authorities have announced.
The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) stated that vaccinations in Kent will be broadened to include 15 and 16-year-olds as a precautionary step to "ensure longer-term protection."
Current Status of the Outbreak
No new meningitis cases have been reported for the second consecutive day following the outbreak in Kent earlier this month.
The UKHSA reported that the number of confirmed cases remains at 20, while three cases are still under investigation, reducing the total number of cases to 23 from the 29 reported on Sunday.
Vaccination and Antibiotic Administration
The UKHSA confirmed on Monday that it had vaccinated more than 10,000 individuals following the deaths of two people linked to the outbreak earlier this month.
Additionally, over 13,000 doses of antibiotics have been administered, the agency added.
Timeline of the Outbreak
A report released by the UKHSA on Tuesday indicated that the earliest known meningitis case connected to the outbreak occurred on 9 March, with the latest case on 16 March.
The report noted that the peak of the outbreak was on 13 March.
Expert Analysis and Reassurance
Prof Robin May, chief scientific officer at the UKHSA, commented on the situation, stating:
"Our analysis offers strong reassurance that our existing vaccinations and antibiotic treatment offer will be effective against this strain."
Previously, the number of confirmed cases decreased on Sunday from 23 to 20, while probable cases also declined from 11 to nine.
Outbreak Status and Contributing Factors
Trish Mannes, regional deputy director for the South East, said on Monday that the outbreak had passed its peak.
The UKHSA report suggested that several factors might be contributing to the outbreak, including variations in the strain, levels of immunity among the population, and social and environmental factors.
