Inspection Highlights Need for Training Improvements at Western Isles Hospital
Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) has recommended 17 specific improvements to the mental health services provided at NHS Western Isles' largest facility, Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.
While HIS commended the hospital staff for their strong compliance with online learning modules and their initiatives aimed at reducing stress and promoting wellbeing, the watchdog identified significant areas requiring enhancement. In particular, practical components of mandatory training such as immediate and basic life support, as well as managing violence and aggression, were found to be inadequate and in need of improvement.
Additionally, HIS emphasized that NHS Western Isles must ensure that all staff complete mandatory fire evacuation training in accordance with established risk assessments to maintain safety standards.
The inspection was unannounced and took place in February. During this visit, inspectors reviewed the acute psychiatric unit, assessed ward operations and procedures, and engaged in discussions with patients, visitors, and ward staff to gather comprehensive insights.
Chief inspector Donna Maclean stated, "There was good compliance in some areas, but others had been identified as requiring improvement."
NHS Western Isles has been contacted for comment regarding the recommendations and findings from the inspection.
