Defence of KPop Tribute Show at SSE Arena

The SSE Arena and Aiken Promotions have issued a defence of a Korean pop (KPop) tribute show held at the venue, following complaints posted online regarding the quality of the performances.

KPop music, which blends elements of pop, hip-hop, and dance music through a Korean cultural lens, has achieved significant global popularity through acts such as BTS, Blackpink, and the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters.

The KPop Forever! Tribute show took place at the SSE Arena on Thursday evening, with additional performances scheduled for the upcoming Monday and 16 May.

Official Statements and Event Description

In statements released on social media, Aiken Promotions and the SSE Arena acknowledged the mixed reception, stating:

"whilst the majority of customers enjoyed the show, we understand that this was not what some expected".

The SSE Arena's website describes the event as featuring "all-live performances of smash-hits including Blackpink, BTS, Twice, Soda Pop, Golden and many more, this is the ultimate non-stop party for all ages."

It further states that KPop Forever! will "take audiences on a journey that they will never forget with four epic live vocalists, accompanied by four world class dancers amidst a background of eye-popping lighting and effects."

Additional promotional material highlights:

"With breathtaking choreography, plus songs inspired by the record-breaking film KPop Demon Hunters, this spectacular is one not to be missed."

Audience Feedback and Responses

Some attendees of the Thursday event expressed dissatisfaction on social media, raising concerns about the performance quality.

There were also claims from certain individuals that the show was not appropriate for children and that the ticket prices did not represent good value.

In response to these concerns on Thursday night, Aiken Promotions and the SSE Arena issued a joint statement:

"We are aware of some feedback received following the KPop Forever tribute show."
"The show played in Belfast tonight as part of a world tour, and the content, design and choreography has been built to represent the full KPop genre, featuring songs from BTS, Blackpink and Katseye, as well as eight hits from Demon Hunters including 'Golden', 'Takedown' and 'Soda Pop'."
"Whilst the majority of customers enjoyed the show, we understand that this was not what some expected; however, we are content that the show delivered was an arena-standard tribute to the entire K-Pop genre."
