Tom Jones' Footwear Stolen by Fans During Beach Visit
Sir Tom Jones once experienced having his shoes and socks stolen by fans while he went for a paddle in the sea, as recounted by Danny O'Donoghue, lead singer of The Script.
O'Donoghue shared that his late father, Shay O'Donoghue, who played in Sir Tom's band and also drove the Welsh singer during tours, was present during the incident.
On one occasion, during a trip to the beach in Ireland, Shay was "having a smoke at the car" when Sir Tom removed his shoes and socks, leaving them in the sand before entering the sea. Upon returning, he discovered that his footwear had been taken by fans.
O'Donoghue, who collaborated with Sir Tom on The Voice UK, recalled the singer telling his father:
"You need to go take me to get some new shoes."
The seaside trip took place while Sir Tom was performing a show in Dublin at The Old Shieling Ballroom.
When O'Donoghue reminded Sir Tom of the story, the singer responded with surprise:
"Was that your father?"
O'Donoghue added:
"You get your shoes stolen, of course you're going to remember."
Relationship Between O'Donoghue and Sir Tom Jones
Shay O'Donoghue, who was a member of the band The Dreams, passed away in 2008 at the age of 63.
Danny O'Donoghue expressed a strong connection with Sir Tom during their time as judges alongside Jessie J and will.i.am on The Voice UK.
The two worked together on the popular show for two seasons before O'Donoghue departed in 2013.
O'Donoghue described their relationship, saying they would often spend time "sipping champagne" until the early hours of the morning.
He added:
"Sometimes they'd be setting up breakfast in the hotel and we were all sitting there talking about songs."
Sir Tom has previously recounted how a six-hour champagne drinking session with O'Donoghue once resulted in him being hospitalised.
O'Donoghue said:
"We are cut from the same cloth, we like the same things."
"He's just a music man through and through, I have a lot of time for him."
