Tributes to Grime Pioneer Dot Rotten Following His Death

Tributes have been paid to grime pioneer Dot Rotten, who has died at the age of 37.

The musician's death was confirmed to the BBC by his family. No details regarding the circumstances were provided, although online reports indicated he had died in Gambia.

Early Life and Career

Born Joseph Ellis in Stockwell, London, he developed a distinctive sound blending hard-edged beats with emotional hooks. Throughout his career, he collaborated with artists including Chip, D Double E, Cher Lloyd, and Ed Sheeran.

He achieved a Top 20 hit in 2012 with the melancholic single "Overload." The rapper explained that the song's lyrics were inspired by his experiences with "a major depression."

"The whole song was free-styled, I didn't write one word for it," he told Distract TV, adding that he'd had reservations about releasing such a personal song.
"It's not the song I wanted to come out with, but it's done a lot and I appreciate all of the feedback I've been getting from it."

In recent years, he shifted focus from performing to producing, working under the name Zeph Ellis on tracks for artists such as Kano and AJ Tracey.

A Benchmark for Grime Music

Ellis began his career at the age of seven, rapping and creating music on an Atari computer system.

He released his first mixtape, This Is the Beginning, in 2007 under the name Young Dot.

In 2008, he adopted the stage name Dot Rotten, an acronym for "Dirty on Tracks, Righteous Opinions Told to Educate Nubians," with a playful reference to June Brown's iconic EastEnders character, Dot Cotton.

He announced his arrival with the Rotten Riddims series of mixtapes, releasing six volumes within a month during the summer of 2008.

Clash magazine described these tracks as "some of grime's most pertinent instrumental works," establishing "a benchmark for production styles" within the genre.

Following exposure on Rinse FM and SB:TV, he secured a recording contract with Mercury Records and made guest appearances on other artists' records, including Ed Sheeran's "Goodbye to You," Mz Bratt's "Speeding By," and Cher Lloyd's "Dub on the Track."

He was also invited by Gary Barlow to contribute to the 2011 Children In Need single, a cover of Massive Attack's "Teardrop," which featured Chipmunk, Wretch 32, Labrinth, Ms Dynamite, and Rizzle Kicks.

During this period, he engaged in a public dispute with grime artist Wiley, whom he accused of selling out and being past his prime through diss tracks such as "Pop Artist" and "It's Over." Ellis also had a longstanding rivalry with former collaborator P Money.

The musician was nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2012 prize and released his debut album, Voices In My Head, that year.

Despite the success of "Overload," the album did not enter the Top 100 charts, amid a dispute with his record label.

After resolving his contract issues, he released a series of independent albums and a seventh volume of Rotten Riddims, gradually transitioning to behind-the-scenes roles as a writer and producer.

In a 2012 interview with BBC 1Xtra, he revealed his songwriting process.

"Once I've listened to a beat and I've written a hook, I'd say the average recording time for that hook to be finished and done is about an hour."

He also reflected on his approach to success and collaboration.

"I'm very grounded. I try to stay very balanced," he said. "I have that skill of bringing people together and making things work, and that is what I'm trying to do."

Reactions to His Passing

Following news of his death, numerous figures from the grime community expressed their condolences on social media.

MC Sway wrote, "Very sad news. Sleep well Dot." KWest added, "RIP one of the greatest to do it." Music manager and media personality Bouncer Play Dirty commented, "Thoughts go out to his family. RIP to the brother."

Broadcaster Amplify Dot and singer Terri Walker posted broken heart emojis.

Even his former rival Wiley paid tribute by sharing a video of one of Ellis's instrumentals accompanied by a dove emoji.
