Eurovision Song Contest Expands to Asia

Renowned for its extravagant stage costumes and occasionally unconventional performances, the Eurovision Song Contest is launching its inaugural Asia edition.

Broadcasters from ten countries in the region, including South Korea, Bhutan, Thailand, and the Philippines, have confirmed their participation. The contest's official website indicates that additional countries are expected to join.

Each participating country will conduct national selection events before the grand final, scheduled to be held in Bangkok and broadcast live on 14 November.

History and Significance of Eurovision

First established in 1956, Eurovision has evolved into the world's longest-running international music competition.

"As we mark the 70th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest, it feels especially meaningful to open this next chapter with Asia, a region rich in culture, creativity and talent," said Martin Green, director of the Eurovision Song Contest at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Eurovision rules require that songs be original compositions with lead vocals performed live. Performers are evaluated through votes cast by music experts and fans alike.

The competition has propelled the careers of globally recognized artists such as the Swedish pop group ABBA and Canadian singer Celine Dion, who represented Switzerland in 1988.

Last year, approximately 163 million viewers tuned in to watch the contest, which featured a diverse range of musical styles from energetic anthems to heartfelt ballads.

Political Context and Controversies

Despite its cultural appeal, Eurovision has also been a platform for international political tensions.

Several countries are boycotting this year's contest, set to take place in Vienna in May, due to Israel's participation.

Since 2022, Russia has been banned from the contest following its invasion of Ukraine. In response, Moscow initiated its own international song competition, known as Intervision.

Previous Attempts and Current Organization

Efforts to establish an Asian version of Eurovision have been made since the 2000s, but none have succeeded until now.

In an EBU statement, Chuwit Sirivajjakul, a senior official at the Thailand Tourism Authority, expressed his view on the host city selection.

"Because this city has always been a place where cultures come together, where music fills the air, and where celebration is part of everyday life," he said, emphasizing that the host city of Eurovision Asia should "of course" be Bangkok.

The Asia edition is organized by the European Broadcasting Union in collaboration with Los Angeles-based entertainment company Voxovation and Thailand-based S2O Productions.
