Andy Kershaw's Passing

Former BBC Radio 1 DJ and Live Aid presenter Andy Kershaw has died at the age of 66, his family confirmed. He passed away around 19:30 BST on Thursday.

Earlier in January, it was announced that Kershaw had been diagnosed with cancer and was unable to walk.

Career at Radio 1 and Beyond

Kershaw was a familiar voice on Radio 1 for 15 years starting from 1985. He was known for his eclectic musical taste and for championing world music.

Following his time at Radio 1, Kershaw reported for Radio 4, covering both music and global conflicts, including the 1994 Rwanda Genocide.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born in Rochdale in 1959, Kershaw studied at Leeds University before beginning his career in the early 1980s at Radio Aire in Leeds as a promotions manager. There, he formed a partnership with veteran presenter Martin Kelner.

Television Work and Live Aid

In 1984, Kershaw anchored the BBC's flagship TV rock programme, The Old Grey Whistle Test, after being noticed while working as a roadie and driver for performer Billy Bragg.

The following year, he was one of the BBC's TV presenters for its coverage of Live Aid, a major star-studded benefit concert organized by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for the Ethiopian famine.

Radio 1 Tenure and Family Connections

Kershaw joined BBC Radio 1 in the summer of 1985 and was considered by some as a potential successor to DJ John Peel. His sister, Liz Kershaw, also worked at the station during his tenure, from 1987 to 1992.

By 2000, his weekly late-night Radio 1 show was discontinued as part of a scheduling overhaul. His final months on the network featured sessions by Willie Nelson and Lou Reed.

Later Broadcasting Work

After leaving Radio 1, Kershaw reported for BBC Radio 4, including contributions to the Today Programme. He traveled extensively to explore global music and political conflict zones.

He also worked on BBC Radio 3, where he described his approach as continuing to "ignore categories and mix it all up." He completed musical tours of Iraq, Iran, and North Korea.

Personal Challenges

Kershaw was off air for several years due to well-documented personal difficulties. These issues culminated in a 2008 jail sentence of three months for breaching a restraining order that prohibited contact with Juliette Banner, the mother of his two children. He later received a suspended six-month sentence for another breach of a restraining order.

Return to Broadcasting and Autobiography

In 2011, Kershaw returned to BBC radio with a new music series linked to BBC One's Human Planet. The show, Music Planet, featured Kershaw and co-presenter Lucy Duran traveling the world to record "extraordinary music" in "isolated locations," according to Radio 3.

That same year, he published an autobiography titled No Off Switch, which detailed his life and career.

Broadcasting Philosophy and Humor

On his broadcasting philosophy, Kershaw credited his mentor John Walters, stating:

"We're not here to give the public what it wants. We're here to give the public what it didn't know it wanted".

His distinctive outlook and humor were evident in a statement released after his cancer diagnosis, where he said he was in "good spirits" and joked:

"I am determined not to die before Benjamin Netanyahu, Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Ant'n'Dec. That should keep me going for a while."
