Two Doors Down Set for Eighth Series

Scottish sitcom Two Doors Down is confirmed to return for an eighth series, the BBC has announced. The previous full season aired in November 2023, shortly after the passing of the show's co-writer Simon Carlyle, who died at the age of 48.

Initially, cast members believed the show had concluded, but Carlyle's longtime collaborator Gregor Sharp developed a one-off Christmas special that aired in December 2023. The upcoming season will continue the storyline from where the Christmas episode ended, although broadcast dates have yet to be revealed.

"It was a lot of fun putting the band back together for the Christmas episode last year, so I'm really excited to be coming back with some new tunes, which we hope will turn out just as special.
"The cast are the most talented group of performers you could wish for, and I can't wait to get started."

Gregor Sharp, co-writer and collaborator, expressed enthusiasm about the new series and praised the cast's talent.

Background and Setting

Two Doors Down is a slow-burning hit set in suburban Glasgow. It began as a one-off special in 2013 before the first full series was commissioned in 2016. The show centers on the married couple Beth and Eric, portrayed by Arabella Weir and Alex Norton, and the intrusive family members and neighbors who surround them.

The narrative often focuses on small, seemingly trivial incidents. For example, in one episode, the main event is that Alan, played by Graham "Grado" Stevely, has some spare doughnuts.

Season Eight Preview

The upcoming eighth season will follow Beth and Eric as they strive to maintain a quiet life despite ongoing disruptions from their neighbors Colin, Cathy, and Christine, played by Jonathan Watson, Doon Mackichan, and Elaine C Smith, respectively.

BBC Statements and Live Shows

Louise Thornton, head of commissioning at BBC Scotland, described the return of the characters as "fantastic," noting their popularity with audiences across the country.

"It was fantastic to see the return of the characters which were loved by audiences up and down the country."

Jon Petrie, BBC director of comedy, added:

"We're really proud to bring it back for another series."

In addition to the television series, there will be a run of Two Doors Down live shows at Glasgow's Hydro venue scheduled for September.
