Strathspey Railway Purchases New Locomotive
The heritage Strathspey Railway, based in Aviemore and known as a filming location for the reality TV series The Traitors, has acquired a new steam locomotive.
The railway, which operates on a volunteer basis, has bought a steam engine nicknamed the "Pocket Rocket" from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). This locomotive is officially designated British Railways Standard Class 4MT 2-6-0 No 76079 and will undergo a full overhaul before entering service on Strathspey's 10-mile (16km) line running between Aviemore and Broomhill, passing through Boat of Garten.
Locomotive History and Significance
The locomotive was constructed in 1957 at Horwich Works near Bolton. It previously hauled services on the Esk Valley Line, specifically between Grosmont and Whitby.
Laura Strangeway, chief executive of NYMR, commented on the transfer of the locomotive, stating:
"The Highland railway is a fitting new home for No 76079."
Gordon Kirk, director of Strathspey Railway, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition:
"She is a locomotive with real character and main line pedigree, and we look forward to undertaking the work needed to return her to steam for the enjoyment of visitors to the Highlands for many years to come."
Support and Media Appearances
In the previous year, Strathspey Railway received a £1 million donation from an anonymous American benefactor. The company described the contribution as "exceptionally generous," noting that it would assist with the costs associated with operating and refurbishing its locomotives.
Besides its role in The Traitors, the railway has also been featured in other television productions, including the BBC drama Monarch of the Glen and ITV's Doctor Findlay.
