Pick of the week
Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness
Larry David returns with his characteristically irritable perspective on America’s first 250 years, featuring an exceptionally star-studded cast. Notably, Barack Obama delivers the cold open for this new show. Despite his impressive connections, Larry David remains true to himself in this irreverent sketch comedy. The series, which includes appearances by Jon Hamm, Kathryn Hahn, and Jerry Seinfeld, channels the spirit of Curb Your Enthusiasm through scenarios such as Alexander Graham Bell’s inaugural phone call and the brutal realities of trench warfare. Larry’s knack for semi-innocent offense persists across the centuries. However, as with many sketch shows, the quality varies, and this one is no exception.
HBO Max, out now

Rolf Harris: Primetime Predator
In a two-part documentary by Nick Sweeney, the disturbing parallels between Rolf Harris and his TV contemporary Jimmy Savile are explored. Both men surrounded themselves with children and cultivated public images of gentle harmlessness, while concealing their predatory behaviors. The archival footage reveals how little Harris attempted to hide his true nature and suggests that his employers largely ignored warning signs. The documentary features courageous testimonies from women who suffered abuse at Harris’s hands, highlighting the lifelong trauma caused by such experiences.
Prime Video, from Monday 29 June

Elle
The Legally Blonde film universe expands with this prequel starring Lexi Minetree as Elle Woods, originally portrayed by Reese Witherspoon. Minetree effectively captures Elle’s blend of lightheartedness and intelligence. Set in 1995, Elle’s life in Bel Air is idyllic and pastel-colored until her parents announce a move to Seattle. At her new school, dubbed Grunge High, Elle struggles to fit in, feeling "very blond" despite sporting a brand-new Nirvana T-shirt. Nevertheless, her unwavering optimism soon becomes her greatest asset.
Prime Video, from Wednesday 1 July

Worst Neighbor Ever
A woman recalls a neighbor who would "be out there, mowing her yard naked," initially perceived as merely eccentric. From the creators of Worst Ex Ever and Worst Roommate Ever comes this unsettling compilation of next-door nightmares. The series sometimes struggles with tone, wavering between a comedic romp and a horror story. However, the accounts—ranging from harassment and nuisance to property damage and serious physical threats—are compelling and serve as a reminder to appreciate one’s own circumstances.
Netflix, from Wednesday 1 July

Survival of the Thickest
The third and final season of Michelle Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel’s body-positive comedy-drama arrives. The series, which began with a breakup, may come full circle as Mavis (Buteau) appears poised to invest in a new romantic relationship. This development coincides with mixed reviews for her latest creative project. The show maintains its broad, straightforward style while remaining charming and humorous, consistently upholding themes of respect and inclusivity through to its conclusion.
Netflix, from Thursday 2 July

Silo
This claustrophobic sci-fi series returns, plunging viewers back into a dystopian underground world. The current inhabitants find it difficult to imagine life before the Silo, but through certain characters’ perspectives, glimpses of the past emerge. Alongside this origin story, present-day tension escalates as the possibility of returning to the surface looms. The world-building is convincing, and the cast—including Rebecca Ferguson and Harriet Walter—delivers performances marked by weariness and defiance.
Apple TV, from Friday 3 July

The Simpsons: Simpsley
Despite its long run, this iconic animated series continues to produce episodes, though quality may vary. This summer, the Simpsons embark on standalone adventures, including a Black Mirror parody set for August. This week’s episode parodies The Talented Mr Ripley, with penniless con artist Marge Bouvier sent to Italy to persuade wealthy Seymour Skinner to return home. Upon witnessing his lifestyle, Marge’s plans shift, complicated by the presence of his idle guest, Homer Simpsley.
