Harry Potter TV Series Renewed for Second Season
HBO has confirmed that the Harry Potter TV series will return for a second season, with filming scheduled to begin later this year in autumn.
Although the network has not officially announced a title for the upcoming season, it is widely believed that the series will adapt the second book in J.K. Rowling's acclaimed saga, The Chamber of Secrets.
The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is set to premiere this Christmas on HBO Max.
Creative Team and Production Plans
Jon Brown, the writer who contributed to the first season and is also known for his work on Succession, has been promoted to co-showrunner alongside Francesca Gardiner, the showrunner of season one.
HBO has previously announced an ambitious plan to adapt all seven books in Rowling's series over the next decade, with each season dedicated to one book.
In a statement, Gardiner discussed the production schedule for season two:
"The return to filming for season two this autumn is part of plans for 'overlapping production schedules' as season one finishes."
She also emphasized the importance of Brown's new role:
"Bringing in Jon Brown as co-showrunner was key to maintaining our momentum. I've loved working with Jon from the very first day we met... I have huge admiration for his writing, but he's also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person."
Gardiner continues to serve as executive producer alongside director Mark Mylod, known for his work on Succession, who directed multiple episodes of the first season.
Brown expressed his enthusiasm for continuing with the series, stating:
"I'm excited to continue my work on the series and thankful to Francesca Gardiner and HBO for putting their faith in me to continue this remarkable journey. Seems you're never too old to get your invitation to Hogwarts."
Season One Overview and Casting
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone will depict Harry's first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as he navigates a new magical world and comes to terms with his identity as a wizard.
The first trailer for the series was released in March 2025, showcasing beloved moments from the books, iconic set pieces, and glimpses of the central characters.
The young cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. These actors were selected from an open casting call that attracted over 30,000 children.
There has not yet been an official casting announcement for Harry's arch-nemesis, Lord Voldemort. However, names such as Oscar winner Cillian Murphy and actor Andy Serkis have been speculated for the role.
Last month, Ralph Fiennes, who originally portrayed Voldemort in the film series, told BBC's The Claudia Winkleman Show that Doctor Strange star Tilda Swinton would be:
"Fantastic" to take up the mantle.
Production Timeline and Future Plans
Filming for season one began in July 2025. HBO chairman Casey Bloys revealed in November 2025 that writing for the second season had already commenced during the production of the first season.
A premiere date for season two has not yet been announced.
The Chamber of Secrets will follow Harry and his friends into their second year at Hogwarts, where they confront dark mysteries, dangerous creatures, and old enemies.
