Ghosts TV Sitcom Revived as Feature Film with Original Cast

The Bafta-nominated TV comedy Ghosts is being adapted into a feature film, reuniting its original creators and cast for a new story set in the haunted Button House mansion.

Ghosts TV Comedy Adapted into Feature Film

Ghosts, the Bafta-nominated British television comedy about a young couple who inherit a dilapidated mansion inhabited by ghosts, is being adapted into a feature film.

The new film, titled Ghosts: The Possession of Button House, will feature the return of the show's writers, creators, and principal cast members Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond. It will also include actors Charlotte Ritchie, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, and Lolly Adefope.

Series Background and Popularity

The original television series aired for five seasons on BBC One. Its final episode, a Christmas special broadcast in 2023, attracted an audience of 7.2 million viewers.

Creators' Return and New Story

Regarding the decision to revisit the series, the creators stated:

"We never planned to come back," the show's creators said.
"But when we had the idea for this story, we all got so excited that we couldn't resist returning to our haunted home for one more adventure.
"We can't wait to be together and to welcome some brilliant new faces, to tell this soul-stirring tale of life and death."

Martha Howe-Douglas added on Instagram:

"You're going to need popcorn."

Setting and Characters

The mansion, known as Button House, is inhabited by ghosts from various historical periods, ranging from prehistoric times to the present day.

Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe portray Alison and Mike, a contemporary couple who recently had a baby in the series' final season.

Production Details

The feature film will be shot at the same location as the television series, West Horsley Place in Surrey.

Simon Hynd will return as director. His previous television credits include Motherland and There She Goes.

Industry and Distribution

In addition to the UK version, Ghosts has been adapted into a successful US version, currently in its fifth season with a sixth season already commissioned.

The series format, distributed by BBC Studios, has been licensed in six territories, including the Czech Republic. Local adaptations have also been produced in France, Germany, Australia, and Greece.

The feature film project was approved by BBC Film, Lionsgate, and BBC Studios, and will be produced by Monumental Television, a division of ITV Studios.
