Filming Challenges in Welsh Winter

The cold Welsh winter presented a significant challenge during the production of a new Prime series starring Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth, according to a crew member involved in the project.

Directed by Guy Ritchie, Young Sherlock is a re-imagined origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes.

Supervising locations manager Deon du Preez spoke to Radio Times about the experience, describing the process of finding and constructing the series' locations as "an incredible privilege."

Filming Locations Across South Wales and Beyond

The cast and crew were observed filming in various locations throughout south Wales, including historic market towns and gothic stately homes, ahead of the series' release on Wednesday.

Although set in 19th Century England, France, and Turkey, much of the filming took place in Wales, alongside locations in Oxford and south west England.

Du Preez highlighted the region's suitability for period filming, stating:

"The region has a strong selection of film-friendly Victorian and period locations, including historic streets, civic buildings, heritage sites and country estates."

Notably, the Merthyr Mawr estate in Bridgend was utilized as the Holmes family estate in England. Additional filming occurred in the market town of Monmouth and at Margam Park near Port Talbot.

Creative Use of Welsh Landscapes

The Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) served as the backdrop for a flashback scene depicting a Chinese village. Du Preez described this as "challenging" given the show's budget constraints.

"Once we realised the landscape of Brecon Beacons could be the landscape scale we needed, we built a Yurt Chinese Village which looked great,"
he said.
"Fighting the Welsh winter was a challenge for that build."

Cast and Characters

Hero Fiennes Tiffin stars as the young Sherlock Holmes, while Colin Firth plays Sir Bucephalus Hodge, the dean of Oxford University, where Holmes works as a porter.

Firth's character is central to the storyline, initiating a sequence of events that drive the series' mystery.

The eight-episode series marks director Guy Ritchie's second adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, following his 2009 film featuring Robert Downey Jr.

Adding a familial dimension to the cast, Hero Fiennes Tiffin appears alongside his uncle Joseph Fiennes, known for his role in The Handmaid's Tale.
