New Romance Takes Center Stage in Bridgerton Season Five

As fans continue to absorb the events of Bridgerton's fourth season, new details about the upcoming fifth series have emerged, promising a fresh romance that is set to captivate audiences.

Each season of Bridgerton highlights a central love story involving a member of the Bridgerton family. This time, the focus shifts to Francesca Bridgerton, portrayed by Hannah Dodd, a character known for her reserved and somewhat enigmatic nature.

Francesca's storyline will explore her relationship with Michaela, the cousin of Lord Kilmartin, played by Masali Baduza. A teaser trailer released on Tuesday depicted the two characters sharing an intimate moment, touching hands.

While Netflix's period drama has previously included same-sex relationships, this marks the first occasion where such a romance is the primary narrative thread.

"[Those love stories] have traditionally been excluded from things like period dramas - and queer people did exist, have always existed, and will always exist. So they deserve a love story just like everybody else."

Francesca was previously featured as the Queen's "diamond"—Her Majesty's favored debutante—in the third season. She later married Lord Kilmartin, John Stirling, played by Victor Alli, who passed away in the most recent season.

"Two years after losing her beloved husband John, Fran decides to re-enter the marriage mart for practical reasons," a Netflix statement revealed.

"But when John's cousin Michaela (Masali Baduza) returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate, Fran's complicated feelings will have her questioning whether to stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions."

The release further described Francesca as "reserved and contained."

"Francesca has long felt out of place in the world. As Michaela stirs up new feelings inside her, Fran will make discoveries about herself that could change everything," it added.

Background and Character Insights

The series is adapted from Julia Quinn's romance novels, which chronicle the love lives of the eight Bridgerton siblings.

Notably, Michaela is a gender-swapped adaptation of Francesca's romantic interest from the books, originally named Michael.

Julia Quinn expressed last year that although she did not write Francesca as neurodivergent, she was delighted that some autistic fans connected with the character, who often requires quiet spaces and finds societal norms challenging.

Hannah Dodd shared with the BBC earlier this year:

"The writers said it was something they did discuss in the writers' room.
It wasn't something that me or Victor were aware of, it must have just been on the page and that's kind of how it came out in our performances.
But to acknowledge feeling slightly different to your siblings and how society is going about and if that's not fitting quite right with you... it's really important that everybody sees themselves represented on that screen so if we've included another group of people, then that's amazing."

Production Update

Production has commenced on the forthcoming eight-episode season, continuing to expand the Bridgerton universe with fresh narratives and diverse representation.
