Arnold Schwarzenegger Returns to Belfast for Special Honour
He promised he would be back, and now, decades after his initial visit to Belfast as a young bodybuilder, Arnold Schwarzenegger has returned to the city to receive a distinguished honour.
Ulster University (UU) welcomed Schwarzenegger on Monday, preparing to confer an honorary degree upon the Hollywood actor turned politician.
The university stated that the honorary doctorate recognises his significant contributions to public service, environmental advocacy, and the arts.
"Few individuals have shaped global culture across sport, film and public life in the way that Dr Arnold Schwarzenegger has," said the UU's vice chancellor.
Schwarzenegger is scheduled to meet with students and athletes at the UU campus in Belfast city centre prior to the award ceremony.
Now aged 78, Schwarzenegger has received several honorary degrees throughout his career, but this particular honour marks his return to Belfast 60 years after training in the city.
The film star is familiar with Northern Ireland’s hospitality, having arrived as a penniless athlete in 1966 following an invitation from a local bodybuilding judge.
Even then, he was warmly welcomed by hosts, staying at the judge’s home in Dundonald and enjoying an Ulster fry meal.

An honorary doctorate is the highest accolade Ulster University can bestow, awarded to inspirational individuals who have made an outstanding impact in their respective fields.
"He built a name for himself in professional bodybuilding and acting and he used that platform for ultimate good," said UU Vice-Chancellor Prof Paul Bartholomew.
He added Schwarzenegger was a powerful advocate "for the environment, for the people of California and for the philanthropic causes he champions".
"His story – from a young athlete finding his voice in front of an audience in Belfast to becoming one of the world's most recognisable leaders, actors and activists – speaks strongly to the importance of confidence, determination and ambition."
The Red Carpet Reception
Excitement grew within Ulster University ahead of Schwarzenegger’s arrival.
A red carpet was laid out inside the York Street entrance, with media representatives positioned on one side and dozens of enthusiastic students on the other.
Some students held paddles emblazoned with "Ulster hearts Arnold" as they awaited his arrival.
The atmosphere among the students was vibrant and anticipatory.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Connections to Northern Ireland
At 19 years old, Schwarzenegger competed in the Mr Universe competition held in London in 1966.
Although he finished second and did not win the title, he attracted the attention of the judges, including Ivan Dunbar, a notable figure in Northern Ireland’s bodybuilding community at the time.
In a 1995 interview on the chat show Anderson On The Box, Dunbar described Schwarzenegger as possessing great charisma.
He gave Schwarzenegger some advice after the competition and invited him to participate in a bodybuilding show in Belfast.
Upon arrival, Dunbar recalled that Schwarzenegger had no money and limited English proficiency.
"He didn't have anything except enthusiasm and talent, and he did have a talent," Dunbar said.
In a later interview with The Times, Dunbar revealed he had paid for Schwarzenegger’s travel to Northern Ireland and hosted him at his home in Dundonald.
"Everyone who has ever stayed in our house got an Ulster fry, and Arnold was no different," Dunbar remarked.
Following his time in Belfast, Schwarzenegger returned to London where he trained under Charles "Wag" Bennett, another judge from the Mr Universe competition.
Within a year, Schwarzenegger won his first Mr Universe title, a title he would claim multiple times during his bodybuilding career.
In 1968, he relocated to the United States, where he became one of the most celebrated bodybuilders in history, a renowned Hollywood action star, and eventually the governor of California.
Alongside his athletic and entertainment achievements, Schwarzenegger earned a business degree and has been awarded numerous honorary doctorates, including one from Stockton University in 2023, which acknowledged his influence beyond sports.
Following a brief graduation ceremony at Ulster University on Monday, Schwarzenegger will participate in a Q&A session, reflecting on his career with students and invited guests.
