Swift and Kelce Tie the Knot in New York City

Pop superstar Taylor Swift and American football player Travis Kelce have officially married in a high-profile ceremony held in New York City, officiated by comedian Adam Sandler. The event took place at Madison Square Garden, attracting a host of celebrities and fans alike.

Both Swift and Kelce wore Christian Dior ensembles, as confirmed by Swift's longtime publicist. The couple chose to forgo traditional bridesmaids and groomsmen; instead, Swift's brother, Austin Swift, acted as her Man of Honor, while Travis Kelce's brother, Jason Kelce, served as Best Man.

The wedding caused the closure of one of Manhattan's busiest streets and drew numerous Hollywood A-listers, making it one of the most talked-about events of the year. Among the attendees were actors Hugh Grant and Jason Sudeikis, singer Benson Boone, and model Gigi Hadid.

Throughout Friday, large crowds of fans gathered outside the venue, some singing Swift's songs and wearing her concert merchandise, while others climbed scaffolding to get a better view of the proceedings.

The celebrations began on Thursday with a smaller gathering, reportedly attended by about 100 people. A permit filed with New York City officials described this as a "pre-party."

On Friday, the main event saw a tent erected outside Madison Square Garden, which was twice the size of the previous day's structure. A procession of blacked-out SUVs arrived under the tent, allowing guests to enter discreetly. Streets in Midtown Manhattan were closed to traffic, and event crews installed curtains and gazebos to accommodate the large-scale celebration.

Swift's publicist, Tree Paine, confirmed to the BBC that the couple wed on Friday in New York City and provided details about the ceremony. At the same time, Madison Square Garden displayed large signs reading "JUST&T MARRIED," referencing both Taylor and Travis.

Paine stated that the wedding attire was designed by Jonathan Anderson, Creative Director of Dior Women's, Men's, and Haute Couture Collections, who worked closely with the bride and groom. This was Anderson's first couture wedding dress for a world-renowned celebrity. The couple's shoes were custom-made by Christian Louboutin, and Swift wore Cartier jewelry.

Despite the intense heat, with temperatures reaching 38°C (100.4°F) during the long weekend coinciding with the United States' 250th birthday, excitement was palpable. Madison Square Garden was illuminated in a pinkish lavender hue and displayed multiple congratulatory signs after the couple's marriage.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) closed streets around the arena midday, restricting vehicle and pedestrian access, which was redirected by barriers.

Although curtains and tents shielded guests from media and fans, many celebrity arrivals were photographed. Model Gigi Hadid, wearing a pink sparkly dress, and her actor boyfriend Bradley Cooper were seen en route to the ceremony. Singer Benson Boone and actress Dakota Johnson were also captured arriving.

Actors Hugh Grant, Ethan Hawke, Jason Sudeikis, and several members of Kelce's football team were visible at the venue, while other high-profile guests entered under the large tent to maintain privacy. TV presenter Graham Norton, who had been invited following Swift's appearance on BBC's The Graham Norton Show, was also present.

Fans of Swift, known as "Swifties," of all ages lined the blocks surrounding the arena. As more black SUVs arrived, the crowd's enthusiasm grew, with many craning their necks to catch glimpses of celebrities. Some chanted lyrics from Swift's songs or shouted "we love you Taylor!" hoping she could hear them. Fans adorned in Swift merchandise climbed scaffolding and cheered for passing guests.

On Thursday, black SUVs arrived at the venue with guests dropped off under a white canopy tent. Notable friends of the couple, including actress Lena Dunham and frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, were seen in formal attire, reportedly attending a rehearsal dinner.

The two-day wedding celebrations, which included the closure of part of New York City and a guest list filled with A-list celebrities, have been described as the "wedding of the century," drawing global attention typically reserved for royal weddings.

Securing Madison Square Garden, an iconic New York City venue, for the event is a significant achievement, reportedly costing millions. The closure of the surrounding area, including a major transit hub, underscored the couple's influence. Swift is widely regarded as one of the most powerful and famous individuals worldwide.

The wedding celebrations dominated news broadcasts, inspired the Empire State Building lighting, and generated millions in online betting markets as details about the nuptials circulated for weeks.

Pop culture critic Kristen Meinzer told the BBC that the union is significant because Swift and Kelce represent two major facets of American pop culture and identity.

"We worship at the throne of music and football, these are all the things we love in America married together," she said.

Meinzer also noted New York City's tradition of integrating celebrities into everyday life rather than treating them as spectacles.

"We aren't people who run up to our celebrities, we usually leave them alone," Meinzer added.

Swift, originally from Pennsylvania, has lived in New York since 2014, when she purchased two adjoining Tribeca penthouses for $20 million (£15 million) and combined them into a large residence. She has expressed her affection for the city, noting that she can shop without being disturbed and that moving there changed her physically. The city also inspired her song "Welcome to New York" from the 1989 album.

Kelce, based in Kansas for his football career, was introduced to New York City after beginning his relationship with Swift in 2023.

Experts estimate the couple spent tens of millions of dollars to rent Madison Square Garden for their wedding.

Prior to the celebrations, the singer and athlete donated $26 million (approximately £19.5 million) to over 20 charities, though no mention was made of the wedding.

Some found the choice of a 20,000-capacity arena, known for concerts and sporting events with lively crowds, unusual for a wedding. However, the venue offers privacy due to its lack of windows and underground access points. Many believed that if anyone could transform the arena into a wedding venue, it would be Swift.

A Canadian teenager named Emily, speaking outside the venue, said:

"I thought it was going to be more gardens, more flowers, more tropical. Something more fancy, something more Taylor Swift."

New York resident Rose commented on the street closures:

"It's sort of absurd that the couple shut down the busy streets around the arena, but I think the ceremony would be beautiful because it's Taylor Swift."

She added with a laugh:

"I hope it's a beautiful wedding...but I think they should do it somewhere that's less inconveniencing to general populace of New York City."

Fans outside Madison Square Garden cheered when the "just married" signs illuminated the arena.

Fan Tara Rosales expressed surprise and excitement about the wedding location:

"I knew that she was going to get married in New York but I had no idea where. So I can't believe it, I'm actually shook and I'm so excited."

She added:

"She's never an inconvenience. Taylor can do whatever she wants."
